University of Mary Gets Ready For Fall

Posted: Updated:
Many freshman are just starting to learn what college is all about.

Today the University of Mary campus is alive with activity...

Reporter Ben Smith talks with some upperclassmen about getting ready for this year's newest group of students.

Daniel is getting his dorm ready for the new year.

Being an RA at the University of Mary means welcoming over two hundred students to the North Dorm.

To do this, he is getting a little creative.

"So the theme in North this year is manliness.  And so each lounge has a theme and this lounge we tried to do manly movies."

He is making a almost a man-cave if you will...

Or a place where residents can just hang out with their fellow freshman.

"When you get out of your room, really everything opens up." says Daniel.

All across campus, student leaders are getting ready for the new batch of students.

Morgan Dawling is putting together care packages for the new freshman, which includes a little bundle of wheat.

It's something she says symbolizes what going to college means in a young person's life.

"It's a place where you can thrive and grow and so that's what I love about it." says Morgan Dawling

But she says it is really what you make it.

"If you go about it as if you don't want to have a good time, as if you don't want to meet people, you're not going to meet anybody, you're not going to do anything like that. So just really actively pursue what you want," says Morgan

Here's an early lesson about surviving your freshman year... from student leaders who have been there.

"Stay on campus on the weekends, don't go home because you really get that college experience on the weekends, going to the football games, meeting new people." says Medora Sletten

"Definitely being open to the clubs and all the extra-curriculars, that's how you find all your friends and that's how you build that strong group of people that are going to support you when you go through rough times. says Thomas Stevens

"I think that's really what makes your experience is if you're involved than you really love the University." says Liv Stromme

Because in the end, it's all about you, the student.

"College is beautiful because it really helps you figure out what you want to do, who you are." says Morgan Dawling

Sound advice before school has even started.
