"Helping our combat wounded warriors and their families" - this is the slogan for the Purple Heart foundation, that gives the "purple heart medal" to those who have been wounded or killed on deployment.
And since August is purple heart month, Minot honored veterans by having those who have received the medal speak at nursing homes in Minot.
Daniel Haff, who was medically retired from the military in 2008, spoke this week at Brentmoor about being wounded in combat, and the honor of being a purple heart recipient.
He says that keeping these stories alive is his way of showing appreciation to those he stood by in battle, and all veterans before them.
(Daniel Haff, Purple Heart Recipient) "There's many men and women who have come before and that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Either perished in battle or been wounded themselves, and had their life greatly changed. And so to be a part of that, and continue the history, I thought it was important to continue to tell the stories so that people don't forget what it takes to actually maintain freedom."
