Music Brings Back Memories

Posted: Updated:

The Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck recently became Music and Memory certified, meaning they can take a step forward in their music therapy.

Macy Egeland shows us how music can change you.

Many of the residents here at Missouri Slope suffer from memory loss, but now, music is bringing them back.

Everyday some of the residents get together to sing songs from their past, but for Lorena, the music means so much more.

Jonnica Norick has been a music therapist at Missouri Slope for 3 and a half years now and says the music transforms the residents.

"For many of them, they light up and they're in a chair sleeping most of the day and they're now singing and they're singing along to these songs and they're smiling," Jonnica said.

She says it brings them back to some of the most important times in their lives.. memories they may have forgotten over the years..

"We might give a resident an iPod with music from the 30s or 40s so that might instantly be taking them back to that time in their lives of being young being married having children and they're remembering those memories in their long term memory that are stored away but that music is pulling it forward to the forefront again and they're able to remember those things," Jonnica said.

A form of musical healing that keeps on giving... with the help of a donation to get them accreditation and iPods to brighten up the residents days..

The Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center welcomes donations such as used iPods, headphones, and disc recordings of older music.
