Side B Hosts More Live Music

Posted: Updated:

Rhythm Records in downtown Bismarck is known for selling a wide variety of music on vinyl.

But a new, creative project of theirs just may be turning the tables on live music in the community.

Richard Loewen is a jack of all trades when it comes to music.

A singer-songwriter, guitarist, and Owner of Rhythm Records.

But his most recent brainchild is the creation of 'side B' of his store.

"I just listen to a lot of B sides of records and there tend to be my favorite songs on that. I'm a side B kind of a person," says Richard Loewen, Owner of Rhythm Records.

From booking shows to hosting music and open mic nights since the beginning of July...

Many creative and musical souls are tuning into this new space.

"It has a very cozy, intimate feel to it. Very homey. Even though it's a performance venue, there's not a lot of pressure it seems," says Kat Kirschmann, Musician.

Side B is turning into a Plan A venue for many musicians and bands.

"We have acts that are local which is great to see and we also have people coming through from New York, Seattle, Chicago. I mean things that you wouldn't think are happening here are happening here," says Kirschmann.

"The people that I've met in the short amount of time that we've been open has just been a completely eye-opening experience," says Loewen.

"I just think that this place is just kind of like a ground zero for that for people to meet other people that are interested in doing new things and creative things," says Ruthie Knudsen & Andrew Larrivee, Musicians.

Side B has a vibe that's different than your typical bar scene.

Music is what's on tap.

"We just wanted to create an atmosphere where anybody and everybody has a shot at being listened to," says Loewen.

"I'm really happy we got to perform some music together here - that we have that opportunity through Side B," says Knudsen.

On Friday August 29, Rhythm Records will be hosting Roger Nordquist's Mind Explosion.

There will be live painting and music.

Loewen says this will be kind of a grand re-opening for Side B.
