New Detention Center in Early Stages

Posted: Updated:
Plans are in the works for construction on the 70 million dollar Burleigh Morton County Detention Center.

The facility will be located in southeast Bismarck off of Yegan road and Apple Creek road.

Both counties will share the cost of the facility, Burleigh will be responsible for 87 percent, Morton, 13 percent of the total.

Since sales taxes are funding the project, Burleigh county will pay substantially more for the facility..because it has more businesses.

Burleigh County Sheriff Pat Heinert says this is a large project for both counties.

"We have worked together on a lot of things but this is the biggest, most significant piece, and the most expensive piece that we have ever worked on together that we got approved so we are trying to make sure we are doing it right and we are trying to make sure we're taking our time and looking at everything to make sure we don't have to go back and change something in the future." says Heinert

The new facility will house up to 460 inmates from both counties.

Bids from construction firms for the initial groundwork will be submitted on September 4th.

This project will be funded by a 0.5 cent sales tax which will start being collected October 1st.
