Bismarck Public Schools Make Security Improvements

Posted: Updated:

Students in Bismarck will be heading back to school soon.

This year, some changes are being made to all elementary and middle schools to make them more secure.

And as parents wave goodbye, they trust that their child is in good hands.

"It's Bismarck Public Schools' number one priority to make sure our kids are safe so we just are constantly looking at new ways to ensure that," says Becky LaBella, Safety Coordinator, BPS.

"When class is in session, all exterior doors are locked and the only way that you can enter the building is through the main entrance and once they get into this vestibule area, these inside vestibule area doors will also be locked and the only way to get in is through this door right here," says Jason Mittlestadt, Asst. Director, Facilities.

Which directs every visitor through the office to sign in and obtain a visitors badge.

Horizon Middle School, whose office is further into the building, has installed a brand new mechanism called an Aiphone.

"Visitors will come into the vestibule here and they'll come up and they'll hit the button and that'll send a message," says LaBella.

"Just to be able to monitor who's coming and going each day in our school it allows us to be able to see who's here," Terri Delzer, Attendant Secretary, Horizon Middle School.

Aiphones have been put in five schools throughout Bismarck.

The overall goal is to create limited access into the buildings to keep students and faculty safe.

"It's an ongoing thing. We're always trying to look to improve and do better when it comes to safety," says Mittlestadt.

School safety funds set aside by the legislature combined with matching school district money allowed security upgrades to be made.

On top of the A-I phones--other security upgrades include remodeling to force people to enter through the main office.
