Harvest Wait Continues

Posted: Updated:
It's nearly September and many farmers haven't even started harvesting.
Brent Hatlewick at Country Grain in Eldridge says this is one of the latest harvests he can remember.
Hatlewick expected harvest to start 2-3 weeks ago.

He says so far only 20 samples of spring wheat have come into the elevator, all which are being tested for vomitoxin.
He says levels have ranged from less than point 5 to 10.
He says any grain with a vomitoxin level of 2 or more will be discounted.
But for right now farmers just want to get the crop off the fields.

(Brent Hatlewick/ Country Grain, Eldridge) "Not this late. I've talked to a couple farmers who've said they've never combined wheat in September. They are always done. before that."

Hatlewick says farmers have been saying yields have been very good, but it's still the quality that's a concern.
He says the corn and soybean crops in the area look very promising with some potentially very high yields.

Wet fields and a late harvest could mean less winter wheat planted this fall.
