Coal Bowl Preview

Posted: Updated:
12-zip was the outcome of last years game as Hazen raised the Coal trophy at their home field and gained the right to trash talk for a whole year.

Coach Cooley said, "You win you get to kind of know that you won it, and if you lose you get to hear about it for a year, this is only my third year here and the first year we were fortunate enough to win and I didn't know what the big deal really was, then when we lost I said yeah okay, it's a big deal."

Connor Doll added,  "You know you kind of have that little swagger, have that extra confidence you know, if we win we'll smear it in their face, if they win they smear it right back, I mean it's just a good fun rivalry."

"When you lose that one time, yeah I heard it all year, I hear it from my kids, I hear it from Beulah guys, we're good friends with the Beulah coaches, but I even got Christmas cards with the Coal Bowl trophy so you get it, you get it, " said Coach Philion

And the coal bowl smack talk doesn't stop after football season is over.

Beulah Quarterback Casey Walker said, " I think it was the year we lost the Coal Bowl, and yeah they came and they held up the sign at a basketball game, rubbing it in, it's all fun, we do it back and forth just for the heck of it."

Like Walcker says it's all in good fun, a number of these guys are even good friends, well for part of the year.

"I'm friends with a few of them, during season I kind of, kind of cut off contact with them, just because of the Coal Bowl, and the fact that we do have to play them"

And you can bet, the team that comes out with the loss will have the game on replay in their heads until next season.

"Definitely motivation,  you just kind of think about it when you're working out in the summer and during practice, like they have one up on us now it's time to get them back."

Both coaches agree it's a great first game each year with great competition especially since both teams have been solid in recent years.
Going back and forth since 2009-- Hazen has won 3... Beulah won the other 2.
