United Tribes to hold 45th annual powwow in ND

Posted: Updated:

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - The United Tribes International Powwow this year will pay tribute to the horse.

The Bismarck Tribune (http://bit.ly/1pwWoo6 ) reports the powwow will hold an Intertribal Hat and Boot Dance Special and Horse Song Drum Contest to honor the Plains horse culture for the first time in 45 years.

Julie Cain is the committee chairwoman of the United Tribes International Powwow. She says horses helped Native Americans "survive from generation to generation."

The event will run Thursday through Sept. 7.

The newspaper reports the theme for this year's celebration is "We Are All Related." At least 70 tribes will participate in the event at the United Tribes Technical College. About 20,000 spectators are expected.
