In Article: Verendrye Raises Rates
What we really need is the legislature to pass a bill saying that we have to have competitive rates to the power supplier that is providing power your area. I have been on Verendrye for 30 years and must say that they have done a good job of providing electric service to us. Still doesnt make me like them. Reply...

In Article: Finally, A Use For Wind Energy?
The "blame the government" bit for high gas prices is one of those odd claims one runs up every once in a while. Taxes have remained the same; it's the price of oil that has gone up. I'm always amused by people who see the price of oil go from $50 to $70 and somehow believe the rise in the price of gas is due to government taxes.

The bit about wind turbines needing back-up power is true, but this does not mean additional power plants as current power plants already have extra capacity and kick in as needed. Only with massive build-out of say, moe than 20% windpower, would one need more back-up plants. And, as all should know, there are back-up and "peaker" plants for current power plants. Some of them sit there relatively idly and may be used 5 to 10% of capacity, but they are there to back-up coal, gas, and nuclear plants.

Yep, that's right, the industry has to build back-up plants for nuclear power. So, what's the point of nuclear then?

Irony off. Wind is just another sort of energy and is proven to work. It's fuel source is free, price stable, and not subject to cut-off from foreign sources. So it requires a little dancing to make it work it doesn't pollute nor require fuel storage. Reply...

Well I live in Mandan and work in Bismarck, it would be a long haul, i did buy a Honda Ruckus, its got a 49cc motor, gets around 97 miles to the gallon, you dont need a motorcycle license to ride it (anything under 50cc), it goes 40 miles per hour, has a liquid cooled engine, big fat tires, and its just heck of a lot of fun to ride :) Reply...

I live in the country so I would certainly never be riding a bike to work. Bikes are just a big nuisance on the streets and highways. The people that ride them don't follow bike rules and I have seen many near-miss accidents because of the dumb things. Reply...

In Article: Montana-Dakota Utilities customers to pay more
to j58501: our "refund" was approved by the commission and was to passed on to customers through adjustments in our monthly bills. You will not receive a rebate check.
11/07/2006 MDU requested approval for stock aquisition in Cascade Naturual Gas Corp. MDU declared it would have no immediate impact on rates for customers. The Commision approved the stock aquisition 3/14/2007 stating it will "likely" lead to lower rates...
2006 3rd quarter earnings for MDU were up to 108.3 million dollars versus 87.1 in 2005. There was a 62% increase in earnings from utility service alone. This increase is not due to population increase either. Our population has had virtually little change since 1950(please read the 2006 FHA Report) Production in 2006 was also up.
You may not know what the current base rate salary is for an MDU President and Chief Exucutive is...$625,000.00 (salary increase was approved 8/17/2006)

I might be mistaken, but I thought the M.D.U. gas customers were supposed to receive a rebate on M.D.U. gas purchases last fall. What happened to that rebate? I never reeceived one. Reply...

TO ANSWER FARMER'S QUESTION ON 80,000 MDU CUSTOMERS. I GOT THE INFORMATION ON THIS SITE UNDER RELATED TOPICS TO MDU. THAT IS WHAT THEY ESTIMATED THEIR CLIENT NUMBERS WHEN THEY WERE LOOKING AT INCREASING THEIR FEES. ALSO, YOU ARE QUITE KNOWLEDGABLE ABOUT MDU AND BASIN ELECTRIC'S PLANTS, TO KNOW THEY ARE LOOKING AT BUILDING A NEW PLANT IN WYOMING, FOR A FARMER TO KNOW ALL THIS? YOU MUST BE LIKE A LOT OF ND'ERS WHO HAVE MORE THAN ONE JOB TO MAKE ENDS MEET. HUH? Reply...

To answer ND Native. You are right. both MDU and Basin have been selling surplus energy to the open market since the late 80's when most of the plants were built in the oliver and mercer county areas. This has kept our per KW price way below national average. But if you visit either of the web sites for MDU or Basin and read any of there publications. Both companies are expected to run out of surplus energy sometime within the next 3 to 5 years. So what is a company to do. Build, that's the only option. If you drive north of bismarck, all that new wind power is just one example of additional cost for new generation. Also to ND Native look up the Bis tribune archive from last summer and winter and you will notice at least 3 or 4 times in which Basin's generating ceiling was peaked out and one of those times it had to purchase energy at open market price. I do have one question for ND Native. Where did you come up with this 80,000 customer number. Also both MDU and Basin are looking into building or adding on to there local plants. The center plant(MDU) has been looking into a additional unit and Basin is right now building a new plant in Wyoming. Also Basin has been looking into a Gasification\nat gas plant in SD. Figure that a new plant is between 1.5 and 3 billion and that makes up for the additional costs. Reply...
