I wonder who paid for this trip, I will be willing to bet it was fairly expensive. I wonder if they brought the golf clubs with? Did they shoot par at least? This is a joke, they could of probably went to Williston and found out the same information. What does the city of Minot think is going to happen here? Texas and Louisiana have been producing oil since the beginning, plus they have a body of water called the gulf of mexico, sorry, I will not put capital letters on mexico. Plus, looking on the map, where exactly is Arthur, Texas anyway? I don't see it, sorry, it's port Arthur Texas, my bad. I guess I'm just saying, the oilfield will come here on it's own, we don't need to spend the hard earned money the elders of this city and other taxpayers have spent to get it here! They have money, so make them spend it. Reply...
Minot will lose many shoppers because of this extra sales tax being added! They want the stadium, they can pay for it themselves! I'll never see it or sit in it.
Some people will start shopping Bottineau after Wal-Mart opens their doors there, just to get away from Minots sales taxes!!! Reply...
Minot is a fine community that, like all cities, has a few flaws. This may not be a popular statement but Minot is way to dependant upon the base. Before you go and start posting how this is wrong think about this question; What would Minot fall back upon if/when the base closes? Telemarketing jobs will not cover it and there is really not another major employer in the city (besides the city) that could be depended to carry the city forward.
Minot needs to start weening itself off of trying to land telemarketers and related businesses and diversify. I completely agree that Minot should not compare itself to the other major cities in ND but they should learn from them. Bismarck for example has the state government, that isn't going anywhere but they also have MDU, Basin Electric, two universities and MDU Resources all head quartered within the city. What does Minot have? Think about it and try and match up business for business with the ones I mentioned.
Minot does have one disadvantage that the other big cities in ND don't have, a ready supply of workers living in mid-sized suburbs on a permament basis. Fargo - W. Fargo/Mhead, Grand Forks - E.G.F, etc. Minot has the base which is not permament. Reply...
I live in the south and one thing we do down here I would like to see Minot do is instead of building roads with the center turn lanes, build them with grass medians. It actually helps traffic flow and you can put nice trees in the middle and it makes it look better. The other thing Minot needs to do is support the college. When I was a student as MSU only a couple thousand people on a good day would attend a basketball game, they should set a goal to get up to 50% capacity by the end of the decade. They could use this to justify the possibility of a new arena similar to what UND has with the ralf. It's hard to justify though if the only time you get a decent turnout is that two or three times a year when a tournament is hosted in it. Reply...
Minot is becoming increasingly ugly and regrettably the people who can do something about it, don't give a hoot. Landscaping has to to with quality of life in this community and an improved quality of life will attract better business and developers. Look at the Blind Duck corner, look at the 20th Ave strip mall, look at the location of Clear Channel. Why do you suppose no one wants to come to Minot? Why is it so hard to attract teachers to Minot High? Look at the communities that are prospering. Do they look at all like Minot? Reply...
I think minot could improve by having more things to do. I would like to see something set up for single parents. get tougher on drugs they are tough on meth but Pot is a big issue and all people get are a slap on the wrist. I think the minot news and the paper are fluf and try to make minot out to be great. there are big issues here and there just overlooked . Reply...
I think minot needs to update their apartments, inside and out! Who wants to pay $525 a month for an apartment that has old shag carpet and a 1970's refrigerator? And they need to do something about the outsides of these buildings. I mean you go to fargo or even bismarck and the outside of their apartment buildings look somewhat new to brand new. The apartment buildings here from the outside look like the projects.
I also think they should do something about north hill. I mean come on, there is nothing up there except the bowling alley, quiznos, hardees, the international inn, and the airport. There is hardly any food places up there, there is no shopping up there whatsoever, and there is nothing besides bowling up there to do.

This morning's MDN has an article about an attempt by the city planner to improve our landscaping ordinance. As in the past two tired old bureaucrats lead the attack againt this modest attempt to improve the appearance of our city. Berning, who a few months ago, said it wasn't the job of the planningcommission to spur economic development, now raises the specter that development will be chilled, if companies are requred to do a better job of landscaping. Schempp, who came to the defense of the developer of that ugly concrete corner where Blind Duck is located, also spoke against this proposal. Whenever I go through a prosperous town, Bismarck, for instance, I see beautiful landscape that enhances a business. Contact the planning commission and tell them to support Donna Bye's proposal. If a business cant' affor a few more dollars to make their site more beautiful, how long do you think they will last? Surely, it's ugliness that makes the T-Bones site unattractive to potential buyers. Reply...
In reality,it doesn't matter what Minot does to improve itself. We are going to have whinners complain about Minot than too(oh my they are spending to much money)(why did they build that)(etc,etc).........I have seen it already!
They were born complainers and will continue to be big babies! Minot is cleaning up,we can see it starting from last spring............Looks nice too. Reply...
I can't stand empty buildings sitting there deteriorating. There should be a rule if they are vacant for x amount of time they have to be destroyed. But then again, some of the residences here are falling down too. Certain areas have funds to restore what are considered to be historical houses, it would be nice if there was a way to get all houses up to snuff. Especially enforce rules about just plain keeping your house and yard like a dump. There's one a block from me, the man is really nice but what a literal dump. I can't believe his neighbors haven't complained. I bet they have and no one does anything. These are small problems - if they can't be solved you can forget about the bigger ones. Reply...
Although there are many good things that Minot has, the main reason for Minot sliding backwards, and it is is the people involved in all facets of government that are the problem. The only persons that I believe are reputable in Minot and Ward County govt is Jim Lee and Curt Zimbleman. I have always got my answers, wether it be what I wanted to hear or not. They always returned phone calls, did proper research etc. The rest of Minots City Council needs to be removed, it is a city council, not a meeting of best freinds that are afraid to step on there other best freinds feet. Not very many accountable people there, just people that want to look like hotshots. There is no one that wants to be accountable in all forms of govt, something that we really need. I can vouch for the fact that they play favorites and are not for improvement in what Minot has to offer...We really have to look over what each individual has to offer and see what they have done before next election. At that point you will see they did nothing and vote in someone new.We do need a younger city council or at least people that have a vision of what they would like to see. On a weekend you can follow the Minot cars heading to Bismarck. WHY? More to offer...ANd we also need to cut the city council by 1/2,we dont need 14 dummies making the decisions that 7 could. And Jerome Gruenberg has it right. Why are we not building right across the street. When we have county vehicles traveling between two points what will be the gas cost or the mileage payment for people that are allowed that expense be. Are they thinking out all aspects, because down the road if they do rent elsewhere I believe they will find out they should have built right across the street. Reply...

Minot does have a landscaping ordinance, its just not as strict as other cities. A tougher one was voted down. There is also a junk car ordinance stating that cars must be licensed and in good condition, otherwise they have to be screened from view. The city is understaffed right now, so they can't go around looking for junk to clean up. However, if they get complaints, they work on them right away. As for the steel buildings, there is a proposal for an overlay district along north broadway to prevent exactly that. It would create standards for new buildings to try to make a sort of "MSU Neighborhood." If your at all interested in the landscape ordinance or the overlay district, come to the Planning Commission meeting on Monday, July 23rd at 7:00 PM in the City Council Chambers. Make your opinion known, otherwise nothing will happen with it. Reply...
Chris, Let me first say, I love living in Minot. My list wasn't a rant of the evils of Minot, but suggestions on things to make it better. What's wrong with a few t-ball games at night. I thought that would be a good way of promoting family values and encouraging parents to get involved in the lives of their children. It works in Burlington and by the way my kids don't play little league. The Minot Daily never asks hard questions. It is nothing more than a chamber of commerce newsletter some days with a few day old AP stories sprinkled in. In fact the biggest murder cases in Minot in the past 2 months were covered far better by the Fargo Forum and the Bismarck Tribune. In fact, The Minot Daily even ran the Bismarck story on the front page. I have never seen a sports reporter ask a college coach a tough question, at least not in print. I said not everything on my list was serious, but I glad you agree with some of it. Reply...
We have decent shopping and places to each. Kids can play outside and not have to worry to much about them. You still should watch them but the chances of them being snatched are unlikely. The people are friendly. The jobs are out there if you want to look for them. Higher paying jobs are not in the newspaper. I like Minot. Reply...
Really, what makes Minot so bad? I have lived in Minot since 1986 and just resently moved to the country because of my husband's farm. I loved where I lived. Really, what is so wrong with Minot. Reply...
