I try not to use those words (faith and belief) as applied to myself. I could care less if you want to fill yourself with "faith".

I like to learn bits of information from people, and that they can provide facts and evidence if needed.

Faith and belief are usually used synonymously. And when I'm speaking in a common sense way, I usually follow this convention.

However, personally, when I'm trying to be more specific, I try to differentiate between them.  I do not pretend that my differentiation is generally accepted. And, in fact, for those who attempt to differentiate, I have heard it argued more times in the opposite of how I use it (Similar to how Flapps just used it).

But to me it is "belief" in which there is no evidence, but you choose to accept it.

Faith, on the other hand, to me at least, connotes that there is some evidence to base a belief on.  So for example, Immanuel Kant took his daily walk at 4:30pm every day (except once when he was reading Rousseau). The people and stores along that walk used to set their clocks by him.  So if this was Novebember 27th, 1799, and it was 4:30pm, we could not say for certain that Kant would go walking; however, we could have a good deal of faith that he would.

On the other end of this concept of faith is a notion of "Blind Faith"......and it is this that I would use synonymously with "belief."

Again, more times than not, I see that others have flipped these two: faith being without evidence and belief being based in fact.

Thanks Wu...we had great fellowship with the family. And yes, I wish the games would have been closer too! Anyway, I do agree with your point of "faith" having an influence in the political spectrum. However, I believe it is becoming less and less of a detrmining factor...at least in the US. The government has taken more and more steps to remove the Judeo-Christian beliefs that it was founded on. Take the issue of Israel for instance. The Obama adminstration has made it's stance on Israel very clear. They have given Israel direct orders to stop expansion in the Golan Heights and other areas as well. The last US president to openly support and defend Israel, in my opinion, was Reagan. Yes, Israel is near and dear to my heart personally, but there are many Christians that adhere to "replacement theology"...the belief that the "church" has replaced Israel with regards to God's blessings, promises, and prophecy. Have a great weekend! Reply...

The ultimate question comes down to faith.

The secondary questions .... not necessarily.

ndfinfan.  I had a fun Thanksgiving, thank you. (I wish the games would have been better, though). I hope you had a great day that was spent with family.....and delicious food.

I think we agree that it does comes down to a matter of faith....and not a logical proof.  However, collectively, those who made that leap of faith then (necessarily) make secondary claims based on that bridge-of-belief.

For those of us who did not cross that chasm, there are modern issues that we, non-believers, find a separate conclusion than those arrived at by believers.

To be sure, I think most secular thought would follow religious thought on the overwhelming spectrum of thought - - particularly moral thought.  Because I think most ethic is rooted in efficacy.  "Don't eat pig" was probably a very smart idea at one time....not for religious reasons, but because it made good health sense in BC times.

I think most of The Decalogue could have been arrived at had there been no Jews (Hammurabi seems to have come to similar concusions).

Yet even in areas where persons of secular and religious find common ground, there are matters of emphasis.

For example:  I know you to hold a pro-Israel political point of view.  To do so is not necessarily a religious point-of-view and certainly one can be an athiest or agnostic and be pro-Israel.

However, because you also have a religious dimension to your stance regarding Israel, this does differ from the non-believer.

And there are implications for the US military because of it.

I'm not saying your opinion is wrong. Not at all. But as this discussion relates to Marilyn's question a few pages ago, those who believe in Christianity, collectively, impact our (the USA's) world view in a dominant way.

And as such, it is to be challenged.

It all boils down to faith.

It can't be proven or disproven for now I guess.

More blessed of those who have not seen (didn't see Jesus or his miracles first hand) and still believe.   Thats me.

This man/god known as Jesus is well worth the time and effort of an investigation...search for yourself and see what turns up. HOW RIGHT YOU ARE SIR! I SEARCHED AND SEARCHED FOR THE TRUTH FOR MANY YEARS AND FOUND SO MANY LOOP HOLES IN THE HOLY BABLE AND DECIDED IT WAS NOT THE TRUTH. AND IF YOU STUDY OTHER RELIGIONS MUCH OLDER THAN CHRISTIANITY YOU WILL FIND THAT IT IS THE NEWEST ON EARTH AND COPIED MUCH WAS COPIED FROM EASTERN RELIGIONS, e.g., BUDDHISM. IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO THIS, EITHER THERE IS AN AFTERLIFE OR THERE ISN'T. IF THERE ISN'T, GOOD BYE CHARLIE. IF THERE IS AN AFTERLIFE THE SOUL COMPLETED JUST ONE MORE STEP TOWARDS THOSE PEARLY GATES OR WHATEVER, I BELIEVE IT TAKES A LONG TIME, MANY LIFETIMES BUT NOT CHRISITIANITY, YOU EITHER BELIEVE THIS OR THAT AND ITS IN THE FURNACE FOREVER. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH HAS MADE BILLIONS BECAUSE OF THIS BELIEF AND LOOK WHAT THE "FRUITS" HAVE BECOME, PRIESTS MOLESTING LITTLE KIDS! CHECK OUT THE RECENT EXPOSE FROM IRELAND. YET, PEOPLE WILL HAVE THEIR EARS TICKLED BECAUSE OF FEAR BASED RELIGION. Reply...

Found this on the web, I dont know if it is true or not, but it is interesting.

Yeshua is the original Aramaic proper name for Jesus.  The word "Jesus" is actually a mis-transliteration of a Greek mis-transliteration.  In Hebrew Yeshua means Salvation while the name Jesus has no intrinsic meaning in English whatsoever.

The name Yeshua was one of the most common male names in that period, tied with Eleazer for fifth place behind Simon, Joseph, Judah, and John. Nearly one out of ten persons known from the period was named Yeshua.

Hey Wu...hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. You are correct, we have had this discussion...many, many times! I have said many times over that my faith all boils down to the carpenter from Nazareth known as Jesus. The Bible, as strictly a historical document, has been proven to be more reliable than any ancient record man has discovered. Along with other secular writings, it is very evident that a man named Jesus did live in Palestine during the 1st century. This, along with the recorded history of the early church and apostles, to me anyway, indicate that the movement begun by Christ was genuine and not fraudulent. One only needs to look at the lives of the apostles to understand. I have also said many times, man will willingly die for something he believes to be true, as evidenced by Islamic extremists every day. They completely believe they will be rewarded for dispatching "infidels". The apostles of Jesus on the other hand, have been accused of promoting a false religion they knew to be a lie. I argue that they could not have committed their lives and ultimately endured torture and death for something they knew to be false. This man/god known as Jesus is well worth the time and effort of an investigation...search for yourself and see what turns up. Reply...

Shoppe. We had this discussion a while ago. [I think it was with Rey].

The logical fallacy that is being committed is called "burden of proof."  The burden is not on people to prove God does not exist. The burden is on the side who claim god does.

Similarly (but not condescendingly), the burden of proof is squarely on the shoulders for those who believe in Santa Claus, who believe the Moon has water (it does!),  who believe in alien life, who believe in Bigfoot and "Nessie", and who believe in anything that is not empirically evident.
