Why do we keep bringing up the racial issue. This is a problem with the school and it's lack of options, not some issue over who was here first. Stick to the topic, please!
But since you bring it up, I have often wondered how people feel about this.
Say you own a plot of land, you are down on your luck so you decide to sell the plot to Mr. John Doe. Mr. Doe brings cash and it is considered paid in full. - - - - - - -20 years go by - - - - - - - - Land values go up with time and you regret selling your land. Can you go and track down Mr. Doe and try to get more money for the land you sold to him all those years ago? No, you can't.
Even better say you were the person buying the land, how would you feel if the former owner, who you have already paid, tracked you down and demanded that you pay for the land again and again?
I know the land under the lake is getting paid for over and over, but the thing nobody talks about here, is the FACT that there was non-natives that owned land that is under the lake. No matter if you like it or not, they paid for their land too. It wasn't them took the Indian's land. The government made these deals with the Indians. A lot of times, they drew up shady deals to aquire it. But the fact is the land was then sold to people that actually worked hard to buy it from them. These people have never had any reimbursement for their land. Every time I hear the same old argument of how the tribes land was lost when the lake was formed, I think what about the rest of the people that had land that was flooded there.
Now I tend to avoid these arguments as I live in the heart of the reservation, but when I run into narrow minded people on either side of the argument, something needs to be said.
This post is a school issue as far as I can tell, lets keep it as that. As long as the school is considering itself a PUBLIC school, getting tax money from the US Govt. to operate, then it would be very wrong to ask that non-natives to move away. Are you stuck in the 50's? Maybe you miss the days of segregation? Until we do away with all these negative viewpoints, will we ever getting beyond the race issues. Reply...
you know this is bs....the native americans owned this land from the very beginning...THE VERY BEGINNING.....and the white people took over their land...if the native americans take the land back to have a reservation, they have all rights to that.....and if the white people are living there....they need to respect the fact that they are living on the reservation and if they dont like it then they can move off the reservation. most people dont see it but they owe native americans alot more than they think they do....by taking over their land they took over their culture and now the tribes have very little of their culture left and they want to value that. It is all about RESPECT for their culture....and if you dont want your child to learn this then move or change schools. and with the tax money bs...excuse you we owe it to them and you know they pay taxes too....so stfu travislee_johnson Reply...
Its not that simple to just go out and find a teacher that has a degree in a second language. The school doesnt GO OUT LOOKING for teachers either. You have to advertise, and when there is an interested teacher, they have to have creditials that meet the standards that meet what New Town is looking for. Then they have to have the right schooling, and degrees. Qualified teachers, have to go through background checks, and finger printing to make sure everything is what it should be. I think that it would be nice for students to learn a different culture than our own. I studied Hidatsa in college, and I feel better I did, now that I know more about my heritage and where I come from and my own beliefs. I studied spanish in high school, and now it comes in handy when I need it. Students that have the option to learn are very lucky. They're are so many kids in this world that wont get schooling. The students here are very lucky to have the school and teachers that are willing to teach them what they think is best for the students. Reply...
I can't speak for the original creator of this post, however, I can tell you exactly what I was told by the school superintendant.
We have five kids total, ages 17-2. We (Myself & my wife), thought it would be better served for our children to learn a language that they could use in a broader sense than Hidatsa. We approached Mr. Bluestone about this, he stated that the school had wanted to teach Hidatsa to promote tradition and culture at the school. This is fine with me, however, seeing as though we have no family attachments to the Hidatsa culture, we wished that our kids not learn this language. Mr. Bluestone then stated that the school was making it manditory that all students take this class, and there was no way to take our kids out of the class. He then stated that when our kids would get to the high school they would then have a choice in which classes that they take. The school then relabeled the Hidatsa class, "Native Studies". Our kids are still having to learn to speak Hidatsa in this class. As I have said before, I really don't care if the school teaches Hidatsa or not, however it should be an elective.
So, in all I think that the title is fairly accurate for this post. Our kids had no alternative to taking this class, so what would you call it.
I was born and raised in New Town, and continue to live here. I graduated from NTHS, never learned a second language, and continued my way to a four year college. So unless some new policies were inacted recently, you didn't need a second language. I agree that finding adequate teachers to teach foreign languages might be a problem, but if the school district doesn't pursue getting these teachers, they aren't going to fall out of the sky. From everything that I heard from my meeting with the school, it doesn't sound like anyone there is even trying to find a teacher for any other language. This in it's own right is very close minded, and futher limits any options our kids have. And the kids after all are the MOST IMPORTANT thing.
I just don't see my kids finding any use for this language anywhere except here on the reservation. How many people do you think speak Hidatsa in France, Germany, or even New York City? I think it would be a better use of school funds to teach our children a more main stream second language, but that means the school would have to actually look for one of these teachers. It shouldn't be up to the parents to go find the teachers. I know it is possible, when I was in NTHS, they offered Spanish,French, German, and Japanese. So don't say it isn't possible. The school board just has to quit being so narrow minded and look to offer these options.
This has nothing to do with what race you are, which race I am. THIS HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH OUR CHILDREN'S FUTURE.

First of all, I do not like the title of the subject. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. How would I know, I work there, and I graduated from there. First thing, in order to get into a 4 year college you need a second language on your high school transcript, whether that is german, spanish, or chinese. Doesn't matter. Second, there is a shortage of teachers that can speak a second language. So if there is a teacher out there that can speak dutch or whatever the language may be, contact the superintendent, Im sure he would be glad to talk to you. So all you you think its about race or forcing children to do whatever, you are so wrong. Take a step back and look at the picture once and awhile. Reply...
If your skin brown kids go to school then THEY haVE TO know white language...how else woulkd they go? unless we have actuall teachers at home..wait! we do! they're called MOMS... I can assure you it is happening, I live in New Town. I have kids in this school district. When me and my wife questioned it, we were accused of being racist. How laughable! I have a lot of Native American friends here. I have been told the same thing as the original poster stated. The reason there are no links to this is that it hasn't been in a newspaper. Unless you actually live here, you would have no idea what happens here, would you? Personally I wish one of the newspapers would do some research into this. A real paper(not the tribal paper, or the New Town news), with real employees that can be objective. While they are at it, they should look into the qualifications of some of the school employees. Anyway, enough rambling. Reply...
Do you know why there are no links to this story? Because it never happened. Wake up people. Reply...
I could have swore there are three tribes that make up the Fort Berthold Reservation? Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara are all there. I feel that if a family that isn't Hidatsa, whether it be White, Mandan, Arikara, or whatever, should be able to say no to the school teaching this language to their kids. If the school wants to teach it, well fine. However it should be an elective. This post has sure went from a school issue to a racial fight. I thought we were getting beyond all this racism issue around the reservation. I guess there will always be some shallow minded idiots that can't see beyond the differences between all of us. School executives shouldn't push their personal beliefs into the schools. What's next? What happens if a school gets a sexist person as a superintendant. Would they force all girls to take home ec. Or force all boys to take auto mech. What really is the difference? Reply...

Hey travis_leejack_ss, NewTown has always been on the rez. Fort Berthold used to take up most of western N.D. a chunk of easter Montana and a piece of Wyoming. How would New Town not be part of the rez when your parents were born. Its in the middle of the rez! As far as never forcing Indian people to learn English, holy smokes your a dumb _ss! Its a none issue in New Town, so get over it! As far as the other tribal languages go, their are very little if any people speaking Mandan, and teachers aren't jumping out of the wood work. That goes for Arikara also. Now who was here first? Think about it! Reply...

Bismarck should petition Cabella's. Rapid City got one, it is not so out of the question if the incentives would be right. Reply...

Eds: APNewsNow. Bismarck, N.D. (AP) A woman sentenced to 10 years in prison in the death of her newborn son 10 years ago is appealing her sentence to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Dana Deegan of White Shield was sentenced in May after pleading guilty to a second-degree murder charge in December. She admitted to abandoning her son in her Mandaree home shortly after giving birth in 1998, then putting his body in a suitcase and leaving it in a nearby ditch on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. Authorities said the child died of starvation and dehydration. I can only wish that she would go a day or two without eating ...................let alone however long it took for her baby to starve and dehydrate to death.......Another waste of my tax payer dollars at work :( Reply...

A Garrison woman has been accused of leaving her newborn child to die nearly eight years ago on the Fort Berthold Reservation.
Dana Deegan, 34, was charged Thursday in U.S. District Court with first degree murder. It is alleged that Deegan "with malice aforethought, did unlawfully kill an infant child, willfully, deliberately, maliciously, and with premeditation," according to a complaint filed Thursday.
An infant boy, believed to be younger than 2 weeks old at the time of his death, was found dead inside a soft-sided lavender bag on Nov. 4, 1999. A rancher repairing fences in the area located the suitcase in a brush-filled coulee about seven miles north of Mandaree and found the baby's body, wrapped in a blanket and towel and placed in a plastic bag, inside the suitcase.
U.S. Attorney Drew Wrigley said the baby has been referred to as "Baby Doe" or "Baby Moses" since it was found in 1999.
Deegan made her first appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles S. Miller Thursday afternoon at the federal courthouse in Bismarck, several hours after she was arrested at her workplace in New Town.
Deegan, dressed in a light green T-shirt, blue shorts and thong sandals, told Miller she lives in Garrison with her mother and her three children. She said she attended two years of college and works for a child program through the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation.
Miller said the maximum penalty for first degree murder is life in prison, fines of up to $250,000 and a mandatory assessment fee of $100. Parole is not a possibility in the federal system.
Miller appointed Bill Schmidt, a defense attorney from the Federal Public Defender's Office, to represent Deegan.
Wrigley said at a news conference following the first appearance that scientific advancements since the infant was found in 1999 had allowed investigators to continue working on the case.
According to an affidavit from FBI Special Agent Hal Stutsman, an FBI laboratory DNA analysis identified the "Deegan family" as a maternal match for the baby. Wrigley declined to release how the family was identified as a match in the case. Deegan voluntarily submitted a DNAsample to the FBI in March 2004.
The FBI Laboratory in Quantico, Va., completed a DNA analysis on the sample in February 2007, "which confirmed that Dana Deegan is a DNA match and the mother of Baby Doe,"the affidavit said.
Wrigley said the length it took to get results in the case is "atypical." Results usually come back faster, but many state and federal crime logs are overloaded with samples, he said.
"We're not satisfied with how long it took to get those results," Wrigley said. "I'm an impatient person by nature."
According to the affidavit, Deegan told FBI agents on Feb. 21 that she went into labor in the shower, and "Baby Doe" was stillborn. She said she then realized she was pregnant with another child and went to Bismarck to deliver that baby.
Agents interviewed Deegan again on Wednesday, the affidavit said. After giving a similar statement to investigators as the one she had given in February, Deegan changed her story, the affidavit said.
She told investigators she had delivered the baby at her home in Mandaree in October 1998, and her three other children were present. The baby was born alive, the affidavit said.
Deegan told agents she "cleaned Baby Doe, put a diaper on him, fed him, dressed him in a 'onesie' and socks, wrapped him in a towel and a blanket, and placed him in a basket,"the affidavit said. "Deegan then got the rest of her children ready and left the house, intentionally leaving Baby Doe alone without food or water, and without a caregiver."
Deegan said she returned about two weeks later and found the baby dead, the affidavit said. The charges allege that Deegan knew Baby Doe would die when she left him alone.
