Raising money for the American Cancer Society (who already owns over a billion dollars on assets as of 2005) who in turn supports wealthy pharmaceutical corporations, is like having a fund raiser for Bill Gates.
I know most people believe that they are doing a good thing, and their hearts are certainly in the right place.
Logically, it's difficult to trust anyone who profits from disease, such as pharmaceutical companies. It's also difficult to trust an organization (such as ACS) that has a track record of wiping out "non traditional" treatments in favor of radiation (which itself is known to cause cancer) and chemotherapy, or surgery.
They spend almost no money or awareness or education to PREVENT cancer, which is the main focus of their own mission statement. "Exercise and eat well". What does that mean? Do they pay for public service announcement to educate the public on what foods to eat which are known to combat cancer? Do they teach about the things we eat that are known to increase our risk of developing cancer?
You know, and I know, that they do not.
The American Cancer Society's CEO makes over $750,000 per year salary!!!! So I'm supposed to pay money to walk in a circle to pay for that? No thanks.
Good thing Lance Armstrong didn't listen to the traditional medicine approach, and went out on his own to learn and educate himself. For a guy with only six months to live, he is sure doing quite well, and now has formed his own cancer foundation.
