As I mentioned in my own post about this very subject, I favor a heavy footprint.  History does not seem to be on my side, though.

so, heavy or light footprints?   What is needed WW.

And yes, its obamas war now.   And  October has been the worst month, the deadliest month in the whole 8 yrs for our troops.   Can't blame that on Bush.

We need a decison quickly,  and our allies need a decison quickly.   Its already taking too long,  too much time on the golf course and at the basketball hoops if you ask me.

Shoppe. There is the actual and the perceived.

The fact is.....much of what is wrong in Afghanistan is Bush's fault.  Certainly, when Nixon inherited Vietnam, 10 months into his presidency, he would have every reason and right to say....."hey LBJ left me with a freakin' mess and every move seems like the wrong move." And in this sense, Obama's blaming of Bush is, well......accurate.

However, with that said.......it is his war now. And the American people want him to make a decision. The situation in Afghanistan/Pakistan has changed since his initital assessment upon taking office.  And the "blaming of Bush" should be left to the historians......and they will.

And if this does turn into "another Vietnam", then he will take his place next to Nixon in historical culpability as well.

Light footprint or   heavy footprint.   We have to decide which is needed in  Iraq and afghanistan.

In Iraq and Afghanistan we initially chose the light footprint for obvious reasons:  Less risk, fewere losses of our troops, while reducing the intrusiveness of the occupation and thus the chances of crating an anti-foreigner backlash that would fan the insurgency.  Light footprints woujld minimize local opposition

~~~~~~~~~
But we were wrong.  The locals sided with the Taliban and Al-quaeda out of sheer FEAR.
~~~

Petraeus wants a HEAVY FOOTPRINT... SURGE.

Obama needs to decide, its his war now.

I would really like  Neon , Jack and  WW's opinion on this article.   And anyone else that finds it very interesting.

Thanks , sg

Nobody said there was anything wrong with Vietnam being friendly with France.  I simply said that it was ironic, considering that they'd fought so hard to remove the French colonial government.  Now they're trading partners, and old grievances seem to have been forgotten.  The French were perhaps wiser than America when it came to Vietnam, and left because they knew that it was something they couldn't win.  As it turned out, nobody could.  Certainly not the Chinese, and they'd been trying for centuries.  Reply...

ON one hand, it was France's fault, but a parallel can be drawn to Afghanistan, which is now Obama's war.
It wasn't at the beginning, but it is now. Once we screwed it up, Obama inherited it, and now we have to stop and wonder WTF we're doing there.

Um Rye, go back re-read what I said.

The French caused the vacuum we tried plugging it, but left opening the vacuum again. That by no means it is our fault, it means it is France's fault. Reply...

Marilyn
You're right on the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, but the entire incident..allegedly in the gulf of Tonkin...(sounds like a Jeopardy question..."an allegation that an American ship was fired on in a. Gulf of Tonkin b. Gulf of Mexico c. Guantanamo Bay) But in fact, the entire incident never happened....but..with the exception of goldwater, congress thought it did....
Why did they think it did? Was it faulty intel? Haven't we heard this one before?
Anyway, Goldwater saw through this crap, and voted against the resolution.

Power Vacuum..
Yes...but dont blame it on our leaving, or you're putting yourself in the position of having to answer the qeestion "what would have happened if we didn't leave?"..
which would have been an even greater disaster than it already was...
so..you've really answered your own question. We never should have been there in the first place. Reply...

U.S. Sends Troops to Vietnam (1965): In response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident of August 2 and 4, 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson, per the authority given to him by Congress in the subsequent Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, decided to escalate the Vietnam Conflict by sending U.S. ground troops to Vietnam. On March 8, 1965, 3,500 U.S. Marines landed near Da Nang in South Vietnam; they are the first U.S. troops arrive in Vietnam.

And what's wrong with Vietnam being friendly with France? Holding a grudge gets you nowhere fast. There's nothing wrong with mending fences, learning from the experiences and getting along. It's never too late to get along. Reply...

two thoughts joe.

Third party always loses,  or just  "revamp" the mushy middle / liberal lite republicans (like John mccain, linsey graham, etc).

so, I don't know yet.  But we do ourselves a disservice when we put liberal lite into office under the guise of REPUBLICAN.  :)

I am not one to say the GOP is headed back up yet.   I will say that the tea parties are full of   dems, conservatvies, and the mushy middle libertarians that are very upset about obamas takeover.

Everyone thought the Dems were dead several years ago... And now everyone thinks GOP  is dead.....

Lets just wait and see.   Many of us conservatives are now ready to go with the strong Conservative candidate even if it means a few more years of socialism.. :)

1. If Kissinger would have taken the better deal he was offered a couple of years before,in Paris, we'd have done better
2. We left  because we were getting our asses handed to us...no other reason. Nixon would have stayed forever, but he found a way to blame someone else .
3 Even more lives would have been lost in vain, had we stayed...you can't get around that.
4. The worst guy ...as we look back on the war, was Westmoreland..who thought he'd be the second coming of Mac Arthur, and lied to Johnson.
We'd have been outta there long before we were had Westmoreland not been there.
Troops tied down...something like Pakistan eh? We just can't go blowing up other countries...though some people think we can...

Bottom line.
Did you know that the ONLY senator to vote AGAINST the Gulf of Tonkin resolution was GOLDWATER? He KNEW it was a FRAUD
It was another REMEMBER THE MAINE incidents..good propaganda, but nothing else.
So..we never should have been there, propping the Diem government, which was a puppet in the first place.
BUT WE WERE THERE
and Gen Giap was better than our generals..AND THEY were fighting for their homes and families. We were fighting for a lie.

and this is what still burns the right..it's the root cause of what we're seeing today
THEY STILL CAN'T GET OVER THE FACT THAT THE HIPPIES WON AND SAVED THE COUNTRY...
and they never will.

This power vacuum was going to be there, when the French left. Which is pretty much how we ended up there in the first place. So it wasn't our fault but it did happen as result of us leaving.

You may want to do more research on Vietnam and human rights and communism. They are still very communist. It was the adoption of some free market ideas that really got the country to turn around. I am NOT say Vietnam is evil or is a poop pit either. They are doing well for themselves now, but it was hard and it wasn't all or even mostly our fault. Reply...
