I agree with Tracy Potter 100%. I hope that his measure passes with overwhelming votes. It is unfair for all in the politicl circles. As I have stated many times, as a Governor candidate I only wish I could get John Hoeven off the TV and radio but as the top job in ND how can you stop him from doing his job. I just ran across an interesting fact posted on a website, not sure if it is true, just wondering if anyone can confirm or deny the following:

The amount of food it takes to make 25 gallons of bio disel, can feed one person for a year.

Jack,

I think one  major fear in the populace is $100 and more for a barrel of oil when 60% of it comes from foreign countries, some that subsidize our enemies, and $3.50 a gallon gas that's still rising.

The surveys I've included in prior posts from national security experts and right here in North Dakota show a vast majority of us want to work towards improving conservation, increase our renewable energy development opportunities while gaining national energy independence in a clean, sustainable manner.

Jack,

I believe that through conservation and increasing energy efficiency while diversifying our energy  sources in America with more clean, home grown, sustainable renewable energy is a good way to reduce our dependence on foreign energy and to become more productive.  As Theodore Roosevelt said: "Conservation is conservative"

Just one example of many is the renewable energy project at the landfill in Fargo showing over 40% annual return on a $1 million investment helps demonstrate that conservation saves and it pays capturing methane that used to be wasted into the atmosphere as a pollutant and turning that into energy and cash.  http://apps.cityoffargo.com/solidwaste/energyproduction/

I don't like having over 60% of our current oil use in our country  coming from foreign markets with some of those countries supporting our enemies.  Merging clean, sustainable, terror free renewable energy with non renewable fossil fuels helps America achieve more energy independence, merging renewable energy with non-renewable energy helps extend the non-renewable energy sources, it helps make our energy product more marketable as North Dakota exports the vast majority of our energy production and our major customer states like Minnesota and states east want it that way, it helps keep more of our money spent on energy local and not sent abroad.

I agree with General Wald and former CIA Chief Woolsey that a good way to improve national security for our country is investing some public funds to help diversify our home grown energy resources in a clean, sustainable manner.

I don't think that $100 a barrel oil with 60% coming from foreign countries and $3.50 gasoline as our only option for fuel is good for America.  Those that believe that will continue to work to add to our energy options for more development of clean, sustainable, home grown, terror free, renewable energy.

Come on, Mike.  You and I both know this is NOT about "getting off oil" which is just another buzzword like "global warming" (now "climate change" so they're not boxed in).  What this IS about, is groups of people seeing an opportinity to make money off an industry that is being forced down our throats by the force of government.  A government that is lobbied by political groups such as yours to force us as ratepayers to pay more for the costs of our ulities.  DO you think everyone is so stupid as to believe there will be no consequential effects to our utility bills as a result of YOUR actions.  ALL the increased costs WILL be passed on to us if utilities are charged "energy credits", or have to buy your products at inflated prices.  And we all pay more in taxes for all the handouts your industry is taking in, and will continue to take in.

If your industry is so great there would be a demand for it, but NOT be demanded that we use it.

Bottom line, as I said before, you have groups of people that see they can make money by having others forced to use your product.

Come on now, we all know that the only real solution out there is not to use energy, americans will not make that sacrafice until there is no choice.   If you make laws, people will just revolt (not literly, hoipefully)

Look what happened in California, they passed laws to stop new power plants being built in the state.   Then one summer of brownouts, and all of a sudden Hay...Lets build power plants.

Thanks for the comments Jack,

Many of the current energy producers and researchers are getting some investment or tax breaks by the government, including some fossil fuels and some renewables.  Some of the biggest oil companies while making record profits, are still getting major tax breaks while oil is over $100 a barrel.

Investing some public resources to become more energy independent with more focus on clean, sustainable, home grown, terror free,  energy is important so we don't have to buy energy from those that support terrorists and put our soldiers at risk.  http://www.consumerfed.org/pdfs/No_Time_To_Waste.pdf

I'd much rather invest some of our public funds in a farmer and home grown energy than a shiek.

Here's a recent survey done by UND that shows that the vast majority of North Dakotans would like more public investment in clean, home grown, terror free renewable energy.  http://ndare.org/UND%20Survey.pdf

As I wrote earlier, I agree with Retired General Chuck Wald, Former CIA chief Woolsey, all the Presidential candidates, our congressional delegation and the governors of ND and MN that believe America's energy security  and independence is important and is a common goal for most North Dakotans and Americans including me.

Again, Mike, you do not answer to issues brought to light.  Can ANY project the "alliance" champions stand on it's own WITHOUT any government funding?  Is a large part of your function as the "alliance" to help procure funding from ANY level of government?  Will you make a commitment of NO government funding, or of taking monies from other utilities in the form of "energy credits" (extortion)? Again, good questions, Fred!

I don't know if there's a coal to propane process.

Some coal companies are capturing methane as they mine for energy now.  It'a a little bit like what Fargo is doing with landfill gas capture/generation, taking that which used to be wasted into the atmosphere as a pollutant and converting it to energy and cash.

Some coal methane collection systems are in China like this example.  http://www.methanetomarkets.org/coalmines/index.htm

Here's a bit from one site on that: "Removing fugitive methane gas from underground coal mines and using it in profitable and practical ways can improve worker safety, enhance mine productivity, increase revenues, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Methane to Markets Partnership is fostering international collaboration to advance methane capture and use projects that bring more gas to market.

To learn more, review the background information on the recovery and use of methane from coal mines. "

                                                      ~ End quote ~

Some of the opportunities around ND are to collect low grade natural gas or methane and  use that lower value energy source on or very near the site for energy development and use on a smaller regional scale to avoid higher costs of retail energy and reduce the costs of transport or transmission.

Merging wind, methane, biomass, biofuels for energy production and use are ways to diversify the sources so you can use whatever is most available and efficient for a constant source but it may not be utility or commercial scale.

Here is a question I have that actually might contribute.  It is about natural gas from coal (sort of)

First there two problems with natural gas, 1 is that it is not easy transport and store a gaseous compound over any great distance.  If the geology is correct, it can be stored back underground, but it is hard to get any quantity thru a pipe. (There is a large underground facility south of Minneapolis)

2 So that means we have to use it locally (Is Mpls local enough? I don't know), which means burning it in a natural gas electrical plant.   Wouldn't it just be more efficient to burn the original coal in a coal plant?  I mean it has to takje a lot of energy to convert coal to NG.

SO MY QUESTION IS CAN COAL BE CONVERTED TO PROPANE? Which, is a liquid, and much easier to transport/store.

ND utility companies are only getting involved with wind power because they KNOW if THEY don't, monies WILL be extorted from them, and given to other "startup wind generators", for the scam of "saving the earth".  The whole thing is a scam, if it was not a scam there wouldn't be a need for HUGE government monies (our money) going into these projects.  And there would not be the scam of "energy credits" crutches to make these scam projects work, taken, stolen from the true providers of our power.  Want to make a REAL diffference, get a fasttrack underway to get nuclear plants built.  After all, the majority of power used by the highly advanced Europeans comes from nuclear. Thanks for the good questions Fred!

Capturing the energy from available resources (not just wind) is adding needed diversity to our energy production mix.

Merging various renewable energy sources (wind, biomass, biogas, biofuels) in a clean, efficient and sustainable manner is a good way to produce electricity and fuel.  Here's an example of a successful project in Fargo that captures energy from the wind, the sun, and methane that used to be wasted into the atmosphere as a pollutant.  The $1 million project is generating new revenues with a projected $310,000 in annual electric sales and saves not having to pay $70,000 for natural gas heating for the buildings on site.  It's a pretty good ROI.  The system has been going strong since mid October 2007.  You can see the generation at:  http://apps.cityoffargo.com/solidwaste/energyproduction/

You may have read where almost all of the ND utility companies now have large wind generation projects being built or in the MISO que.   There is more demand than supply for cleaner energy as ND exports the vast majority of our electicity to Minnesota and states east that want it that way.  Adding more renewable energy to our energy export mix makes our electricity more marketable and sustainable.

The expected life of a properly maintained wind generator is 25 years.  Maintainance and decommissioning is built into the financial models.

North Dakota wind resources have been measured as the greatest in the country and some research shows that while ND coal plants provide a bit over 1% of the nations electricity, our wind resources if developed to their full potential could deliver over 30%.  That's why all of our power producers have been and are currentlly developing more wind turbine projects here along with some entrepreneurs.  Another reason is the cost to produce one Kilowatt hour for wind is currently a bit over 5 cents, while the developers that have been considering a new coal fired plant like BigStone II are projecting a cost of over 8 cents KWH for construction cost per KWH than wind.

Merging wind and other home grown, terror free, renewable energy sources with fossil fuels in a more clean, sustainable manner helps extend those nonrenewable resources, it make them more marketable, and reduces our countries dependence on foreign energy.  That's good for North Dakota and good for America.

Ok Mike if you want to tlk about this, lets have a serious conversation.

It usually takes about 20 years for a new technology to really take off, for examples computers where invented in the 60s-70s.

Wind Energy/Solar is a technology that has been around for some time, and there are a few unresolved problems,

  1. Wind is not sustainable.

  2. Electrical energy is not storable

  3. Maintance cost

Please do not dismiss this, but exp;ain how the above road blocks are going to be resolved.

Thanks for your interest.

Developing more of our states resources in a clean sustainable manner is good for diversifying and growing our economic base.  The ND Alliance are folks from a wide variety of sectors including power producers, electric carriers, growers, individuals, universities and many more.  You can see our membership list at www.ndare.org

Adding more clean, home grown, terror free renewable energy to non-renewable sources is good for diversifying our energy sources, it can help non-renewables burn cleaner, makes our energy product more marketable, and helps improve national security so we're not dependent on foreign fuels.  Right now about 60% of our oil is from foreign markets.

North Dakota State University Alumni and Hall of Famer General Chuck Wald has this perspective on the need to add more renewable energy sources for American security.

http://www.iags.org/natoforum.htm

I agree with General Wald when he said at a recent confernce in Fargo:  America's energy challenge is North Dakota's great opportunity.

you can bet your sweet behind that this organization AND all the "projects" they are pushing WILL get huge amounts of government monies (OUR money), and they will be involved in the SCAM of utilities having to "buy" (extortion in my view) energy carbon credits from them, which WE all WILL pay in higher energy costs while all these "investors" laugh all the way to the bank.......
