In Article: Why are bicycles allowed on highways?

Are bikes really that much of a problem?  If I'm driving and I am about to pass them I do the sensible thing which is to slow down and veer slightly to the left if possible.  Morons around here do the opposite....faster and closer Reply...

SickO, I'm pretty sure she meant horses being used to pull machinery..

Cutie...I think this thread is about a bicycle and its rider getting hit, that's why we're talking about it, rather than drunk drivers. Reply...

"Todays farmers do not use horses anymore"

You obviously do not live by any cattle ranchers do you? I see horses, sheep, cows, etc on the highways being moved from one place to another all the time out in Western ND/SD, Eastern MT, and WY.

Point is, highways are for everyone, not just highspeed traffic unless otherwise posted. Those using the roads who are not high speed traffic, need to just as vigilant as those who are. Reply...

The "bikers off the highway" question is simply a way for Lonewolfie to complain about something that he (she?) didn't like in the first place.

Even if the student on the fund raising tour had not been killed, I suspect Lonewolfie would still hold the "no bikes" sentiment.

If safety, or love for humanity were the main concern, then the question would be "How do we stop people from driving drunk?" or "Why is such a dangerous drug legal in the first place?".... but no.  40,000 die as a direct result of alcohol but that's OK because you like alcohol.  Less than 700 cyclists die and its an outrage, because you don't ride bike.

Don't like bikes? Fine.  Promise to watch were the **** your going, and I promise to ride on the shoulder.

I also think women that jog alone in the canyons of California or elsewhere are not smart.   I agree that joggers/bikers should pay attention and not use phones or cd players...

Actually,  neither should DRIVERS!

Curly, can you imagine what those kids would do if someone went around the table and took each of their widgets away from them? Would they sit there all confused and disoriented? Or would they actually INTERACT and TALK to one another? Maybe get up and walk around and enjoy the events?

One thing I hate to see, and I've said this here before, but this drives me crazy - women jogging or walking or riding a bike down the road with ear plugs in, or yapping on their cells, oblivious to all the dangers around them. There's been cases of women being attacked and drug off into the brush and accosted, all because they were out of their element and left their defenses down. CARRY THE CELL FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY!

What has happened to people these days? Reply...

I love the subject of Alcohol and driving or any other tasks we may be doing after imbibing. And that concerns prescription medicines also.

Technically you are impaired after one beer. A lot depends on your personal body and mind workings. Physiological and psychological functions.

When I was in high school and took driver training, 1954, a guest speaker in one of the training sessions was a Ohio State Patrolman. He stated two things that have stuck in my BB brain to this very day.

#1. Seven out of 10 accidents in Dayton were attributable to ingestion of alcohol.

#2. In EVERY accident there are 2 crashes. When the Auto or Vehicle hits something and when your body hits or strikes the side panel, dashboard or steering wheel if not restrained due to the speed at which you were traveling.  HUMMM.......food for thought at a later time.

When I built my first "really" HOT ROD in 1956 one of the first things, I installed in it was a good seat belt system. I figured if my hero Mario Andrietti wore them  that was good enough for me. That was the food for thought.

I might be part Polish, but I ain't stupid. One thing I don't need is my beautiful body, it ain't really, flying through space and striking at X miles per hour and coming to rest against a stationary object, thank you State Patrolman.

Back to the impairment issue. Have I ever driven drunk? Mea culpa, Mea Culpa, Mea Maxima Culpa. Yes. But here again, God takes care of little "kids" and "Polacks". I never had an accident when I was impaired, had a couple of real doozies when I was stone sober though.

Now after I have grown up, well almost, there's no way I would get behind the wheel while impaired. Period!

As far as bikes on the road, follow the rules. Here in ND we are lucky. Most roads have shoulders. Ask Prairie what the country roads are like in Ohio. Most have never seen a shoulder and the edge of the road is weeds and grasses. Drive defensively and keep on your toes. Learn to drive beyond the hood of your vehicle, look way out there. As far as bicycles traveling in groups, there SHOULD be a a large vehicle at the tail end of the group denoting there are a group of bicycles ahead.

Oh! By the way, my "HOT ROD" was a '47 Plymouth Club Coupe with black and White Naugahyde pleated upholstery, a '54 Olds engine, Herbert Roller tappet Cam, bored and stroked 4x4, 3 Stromberg 97 carbs and a Mallory Ignition. Exterior was White Lacquer and any Chrome left was Gold Anodized. 80 Louvers in the hood and all lights were Frenched. I guess you could say it was a street rod, but I also ran it on the strip in Dayton. Mostly 9's and 10's in the Quarter.

God, I loved that car.

Best wishes, Bill

You got that right Marilyn....while working at the fair, I witnessed something I will never forget.  Sitting at a table in our booth, were 4 young people.  Under age of 18 I would guess.  All four were sitting there with ear plugs in, not talking to each other, eating fries, and listening and playing with the phone/ipad/ipod or whatever they had.  This wen on for about and hour.  We OLD folks were in amazment.  Sad, young people are going to grow up without interaction with others. It wasn't the driver's fault, it wasn't the U's fault, it was the fault of the person that got killed. She was so interested in what was flashing on her cell phone out in the middle of nowhere, that she had to stop on a rise, and apparently her instincts failed her (or she ignored them in her haste to play with her cell) and she's gone. I can't imagine stopping on the highway to look at my cell phone, and not face oncoming traffic. That's common sense, that's survival. THROW THOSE BLASTED THINGS IN YOUR SADDLEBAGS AND LEAVE THEM THERE!! Reply...

Lonewolfie, don't get me started either about Drunks driving..

My 5 yr old niece was run over and killed  while playing by a drunk man.  He had spent the morning in his house drinking, then went driving.

My daughter a couple yrs ago was driving and broadsided by a drunk... only airbags deployed and thank God she lived.

And don't get me started on cars and alcohol. (Whoops..too late) 40,000 fatalities a year with 37% involving drunken slime-balls.

"Fifty percent in good old stupor filled North Dakota!"

I know that this is going to irritate the politically correct.  The majority of alcohol realated crashes occure on or near reservations other than that it's not any worse than the national average.

Really prarie, that trucker really wanted to kill that cyclist that was concerned about texting than the traffic.  That driver DID NOT want this to happen and some of the blame for this should be placed on Brown University for encouraging this cross country bicycle nonsense.  This did not have to happen and people need to understand that a highway is not a place for people to exercise or play on.  There are plenty of places that people can do this at like in residential areas where traffic pressure is low and people generally drive slow.

Geez Prairie...switch to decaf!

Horses can go short distances on pavement, but it's not good for their feet. Some horses even have metal shoes on that make the pavement slippery. Barefoot is best, but not for far and not over a slow trot. Reply...

It boils down to this.  We should not ban bikes on the highways.  However, we should ban bikes where the road is too narrow to accomadate bikes and vehicle traffic at the same time. (like highway 2)  I think that is called common sense.  If the bikers stay off the main lane of traffic, I think it is okay.  I told my story earlier on this thread so I will not digress.  I can't for the life of me understand why a biker would want to take the chance of getting hit in a narrow road situation.  Can anyone explain that to me??

As for farm eqipment.  This is ND.  Gotta expect it.   If I were a farmer and had to travel on the roads a long distance, I would check behind me every few miles and pull into an approch or whatever I could find to let the drivers behind me pass.  We drive to FArgo from Minot via Carrington.  It is my pet peeve to drive on the highway with a peice of farm equipment in front of us and they will not let a stream of cars pass from time to time.  It is unsafe.  Again, you would think common sense would rule but it does not always work that way.
