I have heard many men state that it is only a 2nd income for the family. Meaning that it isn't important role in the daily household living. I work 40 hours a week and very hard at that. I except to be paid what anouther 40 hour hard worker is being paid, 2nd income or not. Most men would never take a the jobs women are working to make what little they get paid. All jobs are important and should be treated as such. Reply...

The city of Grand Forks is now recruiting a Superintendent of Public Schools, the annual pay is $165,000. Something is out of kilter when the average pay for a superintendent is 73,000. It seems that the money could be better spent on other expenses within the school district. Reply...

I tell you what... the oil workers of north dakota bust their tail every day to keep the oil flowing to keep some of these people that we elect paid, and they make what these guys in office make.... but they know what it feels like to have their back hurt, and how their knuckles feel after the iron has beat them down for a week straight. I believe that North Dakota is in for a raise for every worker that has put their time into their job. come on senators, and commissioners... hell, anyone with a title... SHARE THE WEALTH. Reply...

Unfortunately for many schools, equity did not come. ND now has a caste system in ND. The larger schools recieve a greater portion of the funds on top of all the other financial benefits gained from being in a populated area. The small schools are pushed further down. I am quite confident that the adequacy issue will continue to destroy rural education as we know it. Our own residences have helped create the "buffalo commons" from the editorial of years ago. So you feel that the best use of your tax dollars are to pay people $79/hr? Tell me what could someone possibly do that they would earn that much? I can not think of anything a person could do to earn it. I would not even pay that much for services at the Bunny Ranch!!! Reply...

Getreal....The education??? Oh give me a break!!! I used to work for the State of ND and I know SEVERAL state employees working in upper management makin the "too big bucks" that have NEVER spent one singel day in college!!!

I have a very good education myself, and was a secretary for many years so I know what the secretaries do for their bosses, and many of them DO more than the boss actually does, and they sometimes have more stress than the boss does because he lays alot of stress on a secretary.

Any other questions about state workers? Reply...

Are you people kidding me? Obviously you've never put in the time and money to get an education and work your way up to a management position, otherwise you wouldn't make such a stupid comment. There are ALOT of people worth $79/hr and more. Of course the CEO and top dogs should get more than the secretaries and the people who work under them. GET REAL! If you don't like it, go back to school and educate yourself so that you can also be rewarded for your hard work. Secretaries do alot, but they certainly don't do more than the CEO's. And, I'm willing to bet they have alot less stress. Reply...

MMM....most of the high paid executives can't even make a pot of coffee. Their secretaries have to do it for them.

Why would our legislators do anything about the wages when they raise their own all the time? You know those idiots are not gonna do a damn thing that the general public might want. Reply...

Boy is this a good one. The top dogs do not need to make that much money. If you can not live on $80,000 a year you need to rethink your priorities. What do these people do that they "earn" this much? I say that no one in management should make more than $5 an hour more than the employees doing ALL of the WORK!!!

If a secretary is making $10/hr then the head of the department shold not make more than $15/hr. Let's see $158,000 comes out to $79/hr based on a 2,000 hour work year. Holy Canoly BATMAN no one is worth $79/hr. What does this person do that makes them worth over 8 times the secretary?? This is utterly unbelievable.

Why do our legislators continue to allow this gross abuse happen? We all know that department heads do very little. Heck I bet most of them could not do the job of one secretary!! Reply...

You talk about the "gap" in wages for State employees. Why is it that the CEO of WSI is making $158,000 a year, and some of the secretaries that work for the state (the ones doing all the work of the overpaid) are not even making $10/hour and they have been working for the state for over 15 years?

The State of ND needs a damn good overhaul on their wages and start paying some of the lower people what they are truly worth!!! Reply...

Andrew, you Rage at the Machine very well. Your point about government being out of touch with those in need of REAL services is right on the mark. It seems that beaurocrats continually rewrite legislation to create more work for more beaurocrats. It's an abomination! And all the while we have Vets, whom have often sacrificed limbs and health, not receiving the gratitude due them. Not to mention the average Joe and Mary getting paid less than those doing the same work in other states. In other words, if you clean toilets for the state you have a chance. If you clean toilets in the private sector, you probably have to look for a second toilet. Please continue attacking the Machine as it is devouring those whom it ought to be helping. Have a nice sandwich!

The Nuts and mugs analogy fails my comprehension, but as all things in the politics of state, it would be appropriate. As our legislators, state and senate continue to look ever upward for manna from Washinton Dc the HQ of state policy, and fall over themselves to enact the removal of safety nets, promote usuary and squirrel away incentives into real fuitcake schemes and scams, personal or familial wealth and business builders. Promoting PC and BS by the shovel load.

My question would be how come it takes one state worker of any description, without the merit of division to be employed, to take take care of one employed by the private class of buisiness and individual, a very strange parity. It is equally strange that we need a parasitic defined class of social buisness to enact the dysfunction the state creates. I say vote every one and last rascal out of any public office, instead of giving them golden parachutes for playing fiscal games with our money. As we turn into the new millenia let us not forget the state is the peoples servant, and let us consider growing the nads necessary to take care of our own business with the common good in view. It is wonderful that our state offers a wealth of safety nets and benefits to it's own, and yet truly average Jane and Joe, is paying a hefty price for the egghead dreams of those who sleep well at night. One in three Vets are homeless, we have a very broken educational system, we have practically no health care for the poor, and yet proclaim the showpiece of medical advancements, where would that be!, only on TV and for the well heeled. We have a state whose legal entanglement with the judiciary makes our system of law worthless. We also have an executive authority that demeans the value of our lives. As far as I can tell, it would appear the state actuariel department knows full well, how to extract every last red cent from all of us, and would sell each and everyone including our jobs. It would appear I am not sure which legislator/attorney said it but basically stated, 'we the people are stupid, not capable, and only they would know how to take care of us by making the best decisions, the best decision to what, make more business that benefits no one. Our state and many others are just federated lackeys, looking for incentivized returns for jumping hoops, and it is not those in any form of office that do the jumping, it is us the public, I fear there are some very dysfunctional humans employed in places that used to have honor. Well, well, well. What a soup full of nuts do we have cookin here! All of the debate, all of the decanters and mugs, all of the differential in autonomy! Do we expect everyone to get paid equally? Of course not. Folks take on some serious responsibility and we do have to compete with the workforces of other states. Our problems arise from the issue of the low average income. Take our educators for example. Even though they've received some pay increases over the last couple of years, we're still ranked 48th. Sometimes I wonder if we're paying people appropriately in the appropriate places. I don't fault anyone for working themselves into a comfortable income. But how long are we going to remain ignorant of the depressed wages of the average Joe and Mary? Maybe a story could be done about the type of stress that the average person goes through making the average wage on the average job in the average community supporting the average family!
Just a thought.

The state also indirectly employs a lot of private contract work, which effectively turns out more state and federal employment. Apart from all the state style bennies, perks and questionable nephetic contracts, the scary answer would be how much expansive governement do we really need, to manage the state. Used to be 12% state employment was quite high. Today more than 50% is accepted to be the normal, that means we the private and public are supporting a very foreign kind of organization, that doesn't help us make money, but is a negative cost to the state. It would seem to want to make more business for itself by legislating and lawmaking, and appears to be ever encroaching and destroying the idea of privacy. Not even some very scary types of labelled commie type countries were that good, we must have something very interesting in the government going on. I just wish I had half the guarantees and benefits the state offers, all I have is a 'work at will' employment contract and no gaurantee that my savings or pensions will be worth anything. Reply...

I've always found it interesting that news people will report things like this, but won't report what the "average" state employee makes. Here is the other issue, MOST state jobs require a 4-year degree. The taxpayers of this state are getting quality work by an educated work force for pretty cheap. I am glad that Brad Feldman decided to do the story after our raise was approved. Maybe wouldn't have had that great of a response by the legislature otherwise. Reply...
