These oil fields are here to stay (until they run out that is). Oil will stay high enough to keep these wells going, while prices may drop some, this field will remain profitable. I highly doubt we ever see prices go below 35 dollars in the next 3 or 4 decades. That of course is barring some miracle product that do what oil does, or a complete economic collapse and the failure of the USA.

Yes, I just checked the NDDOT website, there appears to be half, if not more, of US2 that is "work zone", which usually indicates single lane traffic each direction, you may have to stop and wait sometimes.  But compare the mileage of work zone on ND5 to US2.  Add all the oilfield traffic (yes, Halliburton, and Schlumberger, rig moves, and don't forget the scoria haulers and the water and fuel tank haulers which are on the go on weekends, too) and you have yourself an industrial park on a 70 mph conveyer belt.

It's a bad place for bicycle tours right now.

As for me, I am coming to you for information if and when I need it!  And you are so right about drivers.  But, we know who to go to for answers!  Thank you!!!  I wonder if they DOT will add shoulders.  I do have some questions that I posed on Earl's site.  Wondering if the state can repair roads prior to disaster declaration?  Do you know how that works? I have a Class A so I know what it's like from inside the too.  If everyone drive  the speed limit as well as following the other rules of the road, driving trucks would be would be a lot easier.  The problem is that many people are very poor drivers and feel that simple things like turn signals, proper speed for conditions, and proper lane use does not apply to them.  But I digress.

The highway between Williston and Stanley has fantastic shoulders and is great for cycling in spite of all the heavy truck traffic and convoys (Hallibuton comes to mind).  Beyond Stanley, well, it stinks. (Shoulder-wise)

I doubt that the organizers realized the extent of traffic, but in this case it wasn't the traffic per say, it was the road itself. As far as the tour organizers, I believe they were using maps from Adventure Cycling out of Missoula, Montana.  Maps, unfortunately, do not tell the whole story.  But a visit to the online NDDOT road construction page does indicate road work being done in the area.

This was a tragic accident for everyone involved.  I don't bike on hi-ways, but I think the mirror would be an excellent tool.  I don't know if it was a single truck or a long line of trucks, but if it was even just one and the biker over corrected....  Do biking tours check with each state DOT for the best biking roads?  And if so, are the DOT's up to date with information?  It was an accident, but it remains that those roads in the west are really getting a work out, then you add all the rain.  But, a biker can stop relatively quickly, and I would think that waiting for the trucks to pass would be prudent. I still would advise that at least for the next 2 or 3 years they stay up on ND5, and avoid Minot completely.  That should cut down on fatalities. And paved county roads here in the NW portion of the state have seen heavy truck traffic increases since the current boom started around here.  I've talked with plenty of truck drivers that go everywhere in the oil patch, and they have predicted that sooner or later something like this was coming, but what can a truck driver do about it, other than do his best to avoid tragedy?  U.S. 2 between Williston and Minot currently has occasional convoys that may involve as many as 20 semi's in a row, usually staying in the right hand lane.  That leaves the left lane for passing.  But as has been noted previously, if you are bicycling on a stretch which lacks enough shoulder to ride on, you are kind of in a bind. If a convoy comes up behind a string of bicyclers, they sometimes must slow down to a crawl until the left lane is clear enough for them to get around the bike riders. Anything that impedes the smooth flow of traffic is a potential cause of an accident.

I wonder if organizers of these rides are aware of the current level of  vehicular activity here right now.

WELL DONE CUTEY...SADLY I REMEMBER AN ACCIDENT ON A WINDING COUNTRY ROAD OUTSIDE OF GILROY, CA SEVERAL YEARS AGO.
A FAMILY GROUP OF 6 OR 8 RIDERS WERE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND A DRIVER WAS REACHING DOWN FOR A CASSETTE TAPE AND WIPED OUT EVERY LAST ONE .   I WILL NEVER FORGET IT AND FROM THEN ON I CHOOSE BIKE TRAILS, ETC.  GRANT

First, the North Dakota Century Code (Chapter 39-10.1-02) says that bicycles are granted all of the rights and are subject to all of the responsibilities as any other vehicle, including other non-licensed vehicles such as farm equipment which does not travel at 60 or 70 miles per hour either, such as combines, tractors pulling plows, or pickups pulling anhydrous tanks at a maximum speed of 25 mph.

If you couldn't tell by now, I ride bike. BUT:

  • I ride on the SHOULDER of the road.

  •  If there is no shoulder, I ride on or within 3 inches of the white line.

  •  I wear a mirror so I can see cars coming towards me at 5 to 10 mph above the speed limit while the driver is talking on the cell phone. (so I can take the ditch if necessary)

  • I wear high-vis green, safety orange, or something equally bright so I will be noticed.  I do not wear camouflage.

I am familiar with the section of road where the accident occurred. It is four lane divided highway so there should have "technically" been enough room without a shoulder but I personally, would not have been on that road with out the shoulder. The problem for the tour directors (if they scouted the road) is that there are shoulders in one stretch, then it disappears, then it's back, then.. etc etc.  Only NDDOT can explain why.

I agree with Jose... an alternate road should have been used...my choice would have been north out of Stanley to Bowbells, then down 52 all the way to Minot.  Nice road..broad shoulders with rumble strips.

Most roads in North Dakota are great for cycling.  (I prefer paved county roads)  5 vehicles per hour?  Please. That means for 55 minutes, I've got the road to myself!

There are however, places to avoid, and oil country is becoming as unsafe for cars as it is for bikes. Reply...

I, too, heard about the tragic accident.  It was reported that there are no shoulders on this road.  If THAT is true, my gosh, it isn't legal to pull over onto the side of a road with no shoulder.  I can't imagine that it is wise to be riding a bike.  And I agree, the organizers of this group are morally responsible if not legally responsible for safety of their bikers.  I don't know where they are headquartered, any maybe they know nothing about rural roads, but neither ignorance nor lack of foresight  can excuse what happened.

That also ranks up there as one of the more asinine comments to be posted here.

No,  I sort of agree with Rugby today.    America is HELPING that nation,  that nation should pay for what they are capable of paying for without harming their own economy... Money doesn't grow on trees, and America is broke..

so if a country wants our help, they should be willing to give and to die to get it done.

I have to admit, Rugby, that was pretty funny;  expecting Iraq to pay for our soldiers being over there after we bombed the heck out of their country.  That's a good one alright. Reply...

Yes, those two countries. Someone here was talking about our taxes going to the wars. Well...if they have oil wells, they can pay for our soldiers to be there. Why do we keep giving free rides?

WTF?  If they have oil wells they can pay for our soldiers to be there.  Are you for real?  That has to be the dumbest thing you have EVER posted.  Our soldiers were not invited to be there.  Our so-called elected officials chose to send them there.  Unnecessarily and for no good reason, I might add.  We have wasted more than a trillion dollars, not to mention the wasted lives, in Iraq and Afghanistan.  All for no beneficial purpose for the people of the United States.
