Finding more opportunities through Easterseals Goodwill

Good Day Dakota

With the goal to help people with disabilities have more opportunities to live, work, and play in their communities… Easterseals Goodwill is making strides to fulfill that mission.

Easterseals Goodwill is a resource for individuals with disabilities, veterans, seniors or their families.
The organization wants to reach as many people as possible.

Easterseals helps their clients and their families build the skills and access the resources they need to be able to work, volunteer, or to just be engaged in many aspects of the community.

We want them to be a large part of the community, Derek Hanson, director of day and vocational services, said.

Part of what Easterseals Goodwill offers vocational and day programs.

Both programs are fairly new to the Minot area and have come to be found as a sort of hidden gem for those looking for work.

LeAnn Updike is a part of both.
Meals on Wheels! she said with excitement, I get lunch and give it to people!

They want to contribute, so they’re enhancing their overall community, Hanson added.

LeAnn volunteers at several organizations in town and holds a job at Marketplace, all through Easterseals.

Her mom, Tammy, said it’s brought new opportunities that she wouldn’t otherwise have.

She does swimming on Fridays, she does food pantry, she does meals on wheels. So she’s busy from the time she starts working until 4, 4:30 afternoon Monday through Friday, said Tammy.

LeAnn isn’t the only one staying busy thanks to Easterseals Goodwill.
There’s currently 20 people in the day program and within the past year and a half, the vocational program has employed anywhere from 12 to 25 people at a time.

Hanson said, I see the value of the people we support working and being a part of the community, what they add to the community.

Depending on clients’ or their families needs, the staff offers different levels of support.

If it wasn’t for them [Easterseals], she [LeAnn] wouldn’t be as far along as she is, said Tammy. She kind of started to go backward in life. Now she’s jumping forward,  becoming more independent.
