Legacy Wall encourages students at Edison Elementary to dream big

Good Day Dakota

Teachers at one elementary school say it’s never too soon to dream big.

That’s why the Legacy Wall at Edison Elementary was made to inspire students about what their futures can hold.

First-grade teacher, Kaley Chick, said “Where do they see themselves going? Where will they be?”
So Edison Elementary students are looking into the future through the stories of those who once walked through the same school doors years ago.

“Sometimes in elementary school, they get that mindset like it’s done after fifth grade,” Chick said. “So we wanted to get them looking ahead to what their future might be.”

The futures of former Edison students look to be pretty bright …
Edison is the alma mater of Minot Public Schools’ Assistant Superintendent, a county commissioner, hair stylist, dental hygienist,  sonographer at the Mayo Clinic, and quite a few teachers, too.
“I think it makes it a lot more relatable for them to see me on the wall but also in a profession teaching them as well,” another first-grade teacher, Calli Tweten, said.

One student proudly looked up to her dad on the wall, Assistant House Majority Leader, Scott Louser.

“They can do and be whatever they’d like to be, whatever their hopes and dreams are .. just to keep striving for that, Tweeten said.

It’s never too early for a little …

“Well pretty much every boy is going to be a professional sports player,” Chick said.

… or a lot of encouragement.

“We really just wanted them to see how many different career opportunities there are out there in the world,” said Chick. ‘We have everything from military careers to teachers to doctors. So just to kind of see that wide gamut of, ‘wow what all could I do?’

Teachers at Edison said with said a lot of popular jobs within their first-grade classrooms are teachers, doctors, professional athletes, and veterinarians.
