12-mile lake of liquid water found on Mars

Italian astronomers and researchers say they have found a lake of liquid water on Mars, just beneath the surface of the planet’s south pole.

In a paper published in Science, the team at the Italian Space Agency used low-frequency radar data collected by the European Space Agency’s Mars Express satellite orbitng the planet.

The radar profiles, collected between May 2012 and December 2015, showed evidence of a 12-mile wide zones of stable, liquid water below the surface of the ice of the south pole.
