You might want to re-route your commute to work this morning.
That’s because 16th Street SW will be closed for most of the day today for flood wall training.
Beginning at 8:30 this morning, both vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be closed off today, May 22, for city crews to practice installing the aluminum columns and stop logs that connect the flood walls on both sides of 16th. This will last until about 3PM.
Last year, the closure took about two hours, and crews are working to get it down to one hour.
When the entire flood control project is complete – there will be more than 20 openings to close in the case of a flood, so this training will be very effective in the case of a big flood event.
