Pipeline protestors targeted a constuction site between New Salem and Glen Ullin Tuesday.
It was chaotic when authorities arrived.
22 people were arrested for interfering with the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline.
Mercer County Sheriff Dean Danzeisen says law enforcement officers responded to the site just north of I-94 late this morning.
The sheriff sayd construction workers were “swarmed” by protesters and that two people had “attached” themselves to equipment.
Danzeisen says 22 people face charges of criminal trespassing.
The two who tethered themselves to equipment also face charges of hindering law enforcement and disorderly conduct.
Both have been freed.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded.
Mercer County Sheriff Dean Danzeisen says,”There is several from all across the state. I don’t even know how many exactly. I would guess that we have twenty, thirty different law enforcement agencies across North Dakota that are helping with this incident.”
Danzeisen says over 50 officers were on seen.
Another dozen or so people watched this morning from the road and were not arrested.
The sheriff says two people refused to walk and had to be carried away from the site.
This specific section of the pipeline is not part of the temporary work stoppage issued by a federal judge or the section that the federal government asked Energy Transfer Partners to voluntarily stop work on.
ETP has said construction is continuing elsewhere.
