2 very different exercises have combined into a flexible fitness program.
Aqua Yoga is a practice that’s only been around for a few years, and now it’s making a splash in our neck of the woods.
Emily Medalen tells us why it’s getting people excited about their physical, and mental wellness-
After spending the morning with a group of women who told me that practicing yoga in the water is the best way to start the day.
Here’s why they say aqua yoga has brought them unexpected joy.
“It does something for me physically, mentally, and spiritually,” says Marcia Lerberg, participant.
“It’s something a little different. It’s not your typical fitness class,” says Mariah Hintz, fitness instructor.
Take a water aerobics class – combine it with a little stretching, breathing, and namaste –
and you have aqua yoga.
“Some strengthening exercises, maybe a little Pilates…” says Hintz.
The low impact, highly beneficial workout is especially good for those who need to go easy on their bodies.
“Water yoga is so much kinder to my joints. And I have to work on balance, and water yoga is a good one for balance,” says Lerberg.
So, why combine the ancient practice of yoga with a pool?
(Mariah Hintz, Fitness Instructor) “You’re looking at the properties of water. We have a warm water pool, which is great for your joints, and for arthritics. The water just really helps those muscles loosen up.”
Hintz says it can be extra favorable to ages 50 and over-
Or anyone who has dealt with arthritis, fibromyalgia, muscular dystrophy and more.
“Increased circulation, it can help alleviate a lot of your back pain, arthritic pain, especially with the water,” says Hintz.
…Lerberg says for her, it’s a refreshing, energizing start to the day.
“You come here in the dark, and sometime during the yoga session you get to see the sun coming up and it’s pretty awesome,” she says.
And they’re building strength, flexibility, and friendship every day.
“It’s a good social experience.”
The class you saw there in the video is taught at Touchmark Senior Living –
They have a fitness center that is open to the public, and Hintz encourages everyone to give aqua yoga a try.
Again, it’s helpful especially if you’ve dealt with any kind of medical issue that has made it hard to stretch or move…it can even help with anxiety and depression.
As you can see, there are a lot of benefits to this new practice!
