Emily Medalen has some reminders for new teen drivers to keep themselves and other kids safe this school year.

Good morning, Emily.

According to the ND safety council, parents need to stress to their teenagers that safety is number 1 when they’re behind the wheel.

I spoke with Terry Weaver, the Traffic Safety Program Manager.

It’s not uncommon to speed out the door and rush to school when you’re running a few minutes late in the morning, but Weaver says those school zone slow-down areas are not something to take lightly.
She says that with over 30 schools in the community opening at once, the risk of hitting a pedestrian will increase dramatically next week.

“By adding multiple kids in the car, that is just more distractions, especially for a young driver, or a new driver that’s inexperienced. So you just want to keep those distractions to a minimum. Pay attention to driving. That should be anybody’s main focus when you’re in a vehicle,” says Terry Weaver, Traffic Safety Program Manager.

The Bismarck Police Department will choose random schools to monitor each day around 8 and 3 o’clock.
