Expanded facilities at Berthold Public School are a welcome addition to the Lewis and Clark School District.

The school has modernized and expanded a brand new gym, cafeteria, music rooms, and vo-ag classrooms.

Some of these renovations are the first to be seen since the school was built in 1963.

Becky Farr was there today to tour the new building.

(Peggy Person/Berthold Secondary Principal) “It’s been a long time in coming and we’re pretty excited about having it.”

(Becky Farr, KX News) Students at Berthold Public School may not recognize their school on the first day.

(Person) “This is our new gym. This wasn’t the primary reason that we did our construction but this was one of the several reasons that we did that, a second facility for our kids.”

(Farr) The new gym will seat 900 people, compared to about 350 in the old one.

(Person) “They’re anxious to get in here they haven’t been able to get in here yet. This is our old gym and obviously we’ll still use this.

(Farr) Two facilities will allow for extra practice space, tournaments, and music performances.

(Person) “This used to be our vo-ag shop, so let me show you in here, this has all been remodeled.”

(Farr) What was once the vocational area, is now an expanded music wing with an office for the music director, choir and instrumental practice space and storage.

The music room is also connected to the old gymnasium to make for an easy transition to practice in one room and perform in the next.

(Person) “I believe acoustically, this will be a benefit to them as well.”

(Farr) As the vo-ag section was replaced, a brand new one was built.

The department has created space for horticulture, technology, welding, and plans to add more.

(Person) “Just a plethora of things in there, the sky’s the limit in there.”

(Farr) But it doesn’t end there.

(Person) “So where we’re standing, where we’re walking right now, a year ago you would be standing outside. This wall right here was the outside wall this was just a wall of glass and on the other side was where our cafeteria was. So, again, everything from here to here is brand new construction.”

(Farr) A renovated science facility is also included.

(Person) “So they moved this wall in, to allow us a larger science lab. Then there’s a movable wall here too, so say our high school science teachers is doing a lecture class and one of our junior high teachers wants to do a lab, we can close this wall off and they’re able to do that. I think pride in the building, pride in your facility. To me, you can’t help but, wow, you look around wow, this is pretty cool. And so hopefully that will instill more school pride. We’re pretty excited, we’re ready for kids tomorrow.”

(Farr) This will add to the many new beginnings of a new school year.

Berthold School has also renovated classrooms into more bathroom facilities, and added air conditioning to older classrooms.
