Bill to Allow Pregnant Women to Use Handicap Parking Fails House

Some of our lawmakers are trying to take steps to ensure pregnant women and new moms have just a little less hassle to deal with.

But the bill came with some controversy. Today the house voted on 1483. A bill to allow pregnant women and new moms to park in handicaps spots during the third trimester, up until the child is one. Those opposed, say pregnancy is not a disability, and pregnant women should not be able to park in spots allocated for those who are disabled. The bill sponsor spoke in defense of his bill.

Rep. Mike Schatz: “To say this would hurt somebody is a stretch. To say this bill will help is realistic.”

Rep. Mary Johnson: “These kinds of bills do women no good thank you very much. I almost hate this with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns that I despised last session’s tampon tax that originated in the Senate.”

The bill overwhelmingly failed with a 70 to 19 vote.
