Bismarck-Burleigh county Public Health wants more people to get the H-P-V vaccine.
The main goal is to increase the HPV immunization rate for Bismarck and Burleigh County.
The vaccine helps with cancer prevention for both boys and girls.
For girls, it can help prevent cervical cancer, which is related to HPV and for boys it can prevent oral and throat cancer.
Betsy Kanz, Health Services Coordinator, says, “It’s best to immunize adolescence between the ages of 11 and 12 because we want to catch them before they are exposed to the human papiloma virus and also their immune systems respond better to the vaccine at that age.”
If a child is over the age of 14, three shots will be given, but all kids who are 11 or 12 years old should only get to shots of the HPV vaccine.
