A Bismarck man was robbed this week. Of all the valuable items stolen, his main concern is over one special sentimental keepsake. After a Facebook post went viral, Bismarck residents all over are sympathizing for this man.
Leonard Hilsendeger: “I could tell because the door was open about that far. It was kicked in. The frame and everything was busted. My latch on the door handle used to be secure you know, but that was all loose.”
Earlier this week, Leonard Hilsendeger had his home broken into.. and had what he estimates around $4,500 in valuables taken.
Leonard Hilsendeger: “Dog tags were missing from the jewelry box.”
Leonard got those tags 62 years ago — when he was just 17.
He said the heartbreak lies in the fact that it’s the one thing he can’t replace.
Leonard Hilsendeger: “But why they took that – I don’t know. They just dumped everything out of the jewelry box. I had two of them. They just dumped them out and took everything that was in it.”
Tim Kellar; Family friend: “Knowing that he was going to be turning them over to his daughter.. who was going to turn them over to her daughter, so that was a – just heart wrenching to see something like that.”
Hilsendeger says now they just have to hope.
Leonard Hilsendeger: “Now we give the information to the police, and after that, we’re just waiting for something to come back.”
His family friend says he was the least deserving of this crime.
Tim Kellar; Family friend: “He’s just a gentle, kind-hearted person and for somebody to do this to him, it’s just a tragedy. It really is.”
Kellar also said the thief better watch his back.
Tim Kellar; Family friend: “To the person that stole them, we’re going to find you and when we do, well, we’ll go from there.”
The family says out of everything taken, they just want the military tags back. Leonard’s daughter said they’d even be happy if they were anonymously dropped off at the Bismarck PD.
