Bismarck youth program has a new name

New name, same mission.

The Big Brothers Big Sisters program in the Bismarck-Mandan area is now the Bis-Man Mentor Squad.

The goal is still the same: Helping mentor and guide children ages 6 to 16 in the area — making a difference in a child’s life.

“This little brother asked his big brother to be his best man in his wedding. They were matched in our program for about 10 years. It’s just an amazing story, they are going to be life long friends. Mom is not sure what would have happened to her son if he had not been in his life,” said Deanna Larson, Program Director of Bis-Man Mentor Squad.

We’re told, as an affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters, the local chapter was not able to keep up with the national organization’s program requirements, which are typically geared more for communities larger than the Bismarck area.

So, the Bis-Man Mentor Squad will operate as its own entity, working with its existing 50 matches of kids and mentors.

There are also 25 kids on a waiting list for mentors.

The group is looking for volunteers and donations.
