The thermometer read close to 30-below this morning in the Turtle Mountains north of Bottineau.
And there was some wind too – making wind chills too low to mention.
Jim Olson was at the Bottineau Winter Park this morning and joins us live to tell us how the cold day impacted the ski destination.
It wasn’t the kind of weather Manager Brad Knudson wanted to see on this day after Christmas.
Because it kept hundreds of people from coming out for some skiing, and snowboarding, and tubing.
But it didn’t keep everyone away.
Naomi Hunter didn’t let a little 40 below wind chill stop her.
(Scream of delight)
She was hitting the tubing hill hard – and warming up with a hot chocolate every now and then.
“What’s your favorite thing to do here?”
(Naomi Hunter) “Tube.”
“Show tube? Have you done it today?
(Naomi Hunter) “Yes!”
Other members of the Hunter family were alternating between inside time – and time on the slopes today too at Bottineau Winter Park.
“Is it kind of cold out there today?”
(Eli Hunter) “It is pretty cold.”
(Lydia Hunter) “It could be worse but it’s cold.”
“How could it be worse, that’s what I’d like to know.”
(Lydia Hunter) “If there was 30 mile per hour winds.”
But she was going pretty fast down the tubing hill – something even your intrepid cameraman/reporter gave a try – and despite getting a little scare when he ended up headed down backwards, it all worked out just fine – including the nice moving walkway right back up the hill for more. Manager Brad Knudson says the tubing hill is very popular.
(Brad Knudson, Bottineau Winter Park Manager) “Some days we’ll have up to 400 people tubing. Most days it’s right around 100 people tubing.”
That can amount to 40% of the people at the park on the tubing runs. But on this day, the weather kept a lid on things.
Of course even when you’re among a small crowd, you can still have fun – as long as the hot chocolate is not far away.

Manager Brad Knudson says since the weather kept people away today, he expects January 6th to be very busy – the next nice Saturday in the forecast.
Meanwhile, Bottineau Winter Park is open each day for those who want to brave the cold.
