Thanks to a total of 200,000 dollars in donations from Great River Energy, Midco and NISC, Bismarck State College will be expanding their cyber security program.

Experts predict there is a 1.8 million workforce gap in cyber security positions.

The Dean of Current and Emerging technologies, Carla Hixson says BSC is the only school in the state with a two-year cyber security program.

With the grant, the college hopes to include a four-year degree option.

She says having someone who specializes in cyber security is important to every business.

Hixson explains, “It’s not a matter of if your information is going to get hacked, it’s just a matter of when. And so it really becomes important to decrease that percentage or opportunity for someone to get in and hack, and steal your information.”

Hixson says the funds will be used to hire an additional faculty member, upgrade equipment and to recruit more young minds interested in the field.
