Chairman of Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians has resigned.

On September 28, the tribal council accepted the resignation of Wayne Keplin. In the release, they say they are “deeply concerned with the evidence they have seen of Mr. Keplin’s misappropriation of tribal funds for his personal business, misuse of tribal funds for personal gain, abuse of the position of chairman for personal gain, manipulation of federal contract dollars, and bribery.” They also say they are aware he is currently the subject of a federal investigation.

A short time after Keplin resigned, he attempted to retract his resignation. The tribal council did not accept the retraction. Keplin then refused to vacate the chairman’s office and has attempted to interfere with the operations of the tribal government.

The tribal council is currently pursuing an action in tribal court to enforce the acceptance of Keplin’s resignation.
