According to Game and Fish a deer has tested positive for chronic wasting disease in the North West part of the State, specifically in Unit 3A1.
CWD is a brain disease that’s fatal to deer, elk and moose.
So far the disease has only been spotted in the southwest part of the state, Unit 3F2, but confirmed cases in Montana and Canada led wardens to think it wouldn’t be long before they saw it further North.
Game and Fish has sent additional samples from that unit for testing to see if there are more cases of CWD in the unit, they expect to have those results soon.
CWD was first spotted in the state in 2009.
Since then there’s only been 12 confirmed cases, 11 in unit 3F2 and the latest one in Unit 3A1.
Game and Fish asks if hunters come across a sick deer that they let their local game and fish warden know.
