A bill to create a senior year tuition waiver program for students attending North Dakota colleges and universities was soundly defeated in the state Senate this afternoon.

The proposal was aimed at students enrolled in the 11 institutions within the state university system.

Eligible seniors had to be pursuing a degree in the science, technology, engineering or mathematics field, or a two-year degree or certificate in a technology field or a skilled trade.

The final vote was 7 to 39.
