Dakota Access purchased nearly 7,000 acres of the Cannonball Ranch in September.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem gave the company 30 days to explain what the company planned to do with the land.
The purchase could potentially clash with the state’s anti-corporate farming law.
In a response this week to the Attorney General Dakota Access LLC says they bought the land south of Mandan in an effort to enhance safety of its workers.
The letter also says after construction of the pipeline is complete DAPL will transfer ownership of the property or use the property for a use that does not conflict with state law.
The Attorney General’s office says they are reviewing the letter received from DAPL and have no further comment at this time.
