Demolition Underway at the Old Morton County Jail

In continuing coverage, demolition has officially started at the old Morton County jail.

Today, crews began breaking down the old cell walls. Yesterday, they had removed all the doors and electrical wiring.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier expects the demolition process to take a month or two. Then, the old jail will be converted into additional space for the Sheriff’s Office and Mandan Police Department.

Sheriff Kirchmeier says they could really use the room, plus it has been sitting empty since 2017.

The Sheriff explains, “As we go through the construction, there’s going to be a lot of moving parts involved. You know, we’re going to have to move offices and things of that nature, a lot of disruptions throughout the summer. But in the end, it’s going to be a benefit for everybody who uses the building.”

Sheriff Kirchmeier expects they’ll be able to use the space by December or early January.
