Bismarck, ND – Hundreds of people could lose their jobs as the Department of Higher Education continues to make budget cuts.

The total number of cuts has not been decided yet, but some estimate it could hit 700 employees. The number will vary college to college and some of the jobs being cut are already vacant positions.

The president of ND United said some schools will be forced to scale back their programs and possibly stop offering certain degrees all together. Because of that, he thinks students will start going out-of-state for school.

“Now when a student in North Dakota is looking at which University to attend, and if they are going to have some courses not offered at all or some that are going to be cut, they’re going to look to other states to get those courses in a timely manner and graduate on time,” ND United President Nick Archuleta said.

On top of that, he said North Dakota schools will attract fewer out-of-state students.
