From the KX News Dakota Storm Center:

Happy New Year everyone!

On this, the first day of 2017 it was chilly with scattered light snow and cloudy skies across the state. There have been a few reports of up to 1″ of new snow, including Dickinson and in some of the northern counties of ND. Scattered, light snow will continue tonight and add up to 1″-3″ by tomorrow morning for most of Western & Central ND. Through the rest of Monday morning and into the Midday, expect rising snow chances as our next weather maker continues to develop and moves across the Central & Northern Plains. By Noon expect moderate to heavy snow, stronger winds and rising accumulations. Through Monday afternoon & night, widespread snow will continue with possible blowing/drifting snow and times of reduced visibility. As this snow system rolls through the Dakotas, driving will become hazardous/difficult if not impossible at times. By the 3pm school bus commute, 2″-5″ is expected for much of the area. And, by our evening commute 6pm-ish expect 3″-7″ with continued hazardous road conditions. Monday night through Tuesday morning, expect continued snow chances to taper off through the morning hours. Widespread accumulations of 4″-9″ are expected with areas of 9″-12″ not out of the question.
In the wake of this snow system, expect more sunshine with temps falling considerably Tuesday. Wednesday & Thursday mornings will be the coldest with lows in the teens and possible chills in the -20s & -30s. Dangerously cold wind chills and potentially hazardous road conditions will be possible through the mid week. After snow accumulations climb into a significant range, use extreme caution while on the roads and consider not driving if you don’t have to.
