EPA director Pruitt quits

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt resigned this afternoon, according to tweets posted by President Trump.

“I have accepted the resignation of Scott Pruitt as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency,” Trump said online. “Within the Agency Scott has done an outstanding job, and I will always be thankful to him for this.”

Pruitt’s resignation follows months of ethics controversies involving his professional and personal actions.

Pruitt’s deputy, Andrew Wheeler, take over as acting director on Monday.

“I have no doubt that Andy will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda. We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!” Trump tweeted.

Pruitt has been dogged by various groups and agencies over his spending, housing and practices involving lobbyists.
