Executive session closed to the public at Lincoln City Council

It was a heated meeting at the Lincoln city council this afternoon. One councilman called for an executive session that was closed to the public.

This video was taken prior to police escorting everyone – inlcuding us – out of the room. The reasoning for the session is still not clear. All I know is that the meeting was called for by councilman John Aman and it surrounds Lincoln Police Officer Sergeant Richard Hoffer. Before everyone was asked to leave, councilman Tom Volk, who claims this is on his porfolio, says he doesn’t even know what it’s all about.

“I just want to note for the record that I was never contacted about this before, and I have no idea even though I’m the portfolio holder,” said Volk.

Those attending the meeting from the public were questioning the legality of having the executive session closed to the public. The city attorney cited the century code saying it’s for attorney consultation regarding ongoing civil litigation, but according to my research there is no current lawsuit against Sergeant Hoffer.

They met for about an hour before letting everyone back in the room, and Mayor Wise simply stated no decision had been made with no explaination as to what they were exactly talking about.
