Flight Delays Possible as Airport Will Close For President Trump

As you can imagine — traveling to and from the Bismarck airport on Wednesday may cause you some extra stress.

Heidi Werosta went to the airport to check on how the President’s visit could impact you.

Greg Haug, Bismarck Airport Director, “It is quite an operation, when a President comes to visit a community.”

Rachel Tippetts is one day ahead of the Presidents visit and came about 1.5 hours early, but if she was traveling the day of the Presidential visit, she would arrive earlier.

Rachel Tippetts, Dickinson Resident says, “I would probably get here 3 hours early, absolutely just cause you don’t know, because there isn’t going to be parking, it is going to be congested, it is going to be harder to come into the airport.”

The airport is in contact with the White House and Secret Services.

When President Trump arrives, all air traffic will be stopped, and this can cause some flight delays.

“The airspace is going to close for about 30 minutes for when he arrives,” says Haug.

Once he departs on motorcade, the airport will re-open.

When he returns from his speech, the reverse operation will happen and will close again.

Haug adds, “And about 30 minutes again when he departs.”

That means any activity in the air or on ground within those 30 minutes have to be stopped.

The airlines are also aware of the President’s arrival.

“They’ll take steps to adjust their aircraft operations to work around it,” says Haug.

Tippetts used to work for Delta airlines and she knows first hand that arriving early is better to make any flight.

“Even though we don’t have a lot of lines for security there are situations where you can get stuck in security,” says Tippetts.

She says when someone like the President or celebrities come to an airport, things get more chaotic.

Haug adds, “Stay in touch with your airline that you’re flying on if there is some effects.”

If any delays or changes do occur it will be displayed on the airports website.

On Wednesday, KX News will bring you live team coverage throughout the President’s visit, including Air Force One’s touch down and departure.

Everything will be back to normal on Wednesday afternoon once he takes off.
