1 in 9 North Dakotans seek food assistance each year, according to Great Plains Food Bank, but those in need, is likely much higher.
Great Plains Food Bank is the only food bank in North Dakota.
They distribute food to 216 programs throughout the state such as pantries, soup kitchens and more.
One of those food pantries is Spirit of Life Catholic Church, but they say the need is higher than Great Plains can fill so they are seeking more community donations to prevent hunger.
“Our traffic has increased especially around the holiday time. More families come together, there is more needs and so we are in need. We are in need of non perishable and perishable items. Those types of items that are ready to eat and easy to prepare as well as fruits, vegetables, milk. Some of those types of things,” said Gwen Beckler, the Outreach Coordinator at Spirit of Life Church.
Last year, Great Plains Food Bank delivered 903,865 pounds of food in Burleigh County, that equals 752,000 meals.
