Former South Central District Judge Sonna Anderson died Sunday, March 10, at Sanford Hospital, Bismarck. She was 61.
Appointed to the judgeship effective 2004 by then-Governor John Hoeven, she served until retiring at the end of June 2018 for health reasons.
At the time, she was battling kidney cancer and making several trips to the University of Minnesota for treatment.
Born in 1958 in Bismarck, Anderson graduated from Century High School in 1976.
She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in 1981 and a J.D. degree from the University of Denver College of Law in 1985.
After being admitted to the North Dakota Bar, she clerked for Judge Patrick Conmy from 1985 to 1987, and then went into private practice until 2004.
Appointed to succeed Judge Benny Graff in the South Central District, she took office in February 2014 and was re-elected to the position in 2006, 2010 and 2016.
Anderson was married and has two children.
