Governor Officially Ends Hearing Process for Former Sheriff

Today, Governor Doug Burgum accepted the recommendation from the Ward County Commission to dismiss the removal proceeding against former Ward County Sheriff Steve Kukowski.

According to a release sent from the Governor’s office, Burgum’s decision was based on Kukowski’s resignation last week, which rendered the removal proceedings moot.

Kukowski retired last week after a lengthy investigation into the death of an inmate at the Ward County Jail in October of 2014.

Kukowski faced misdemeanor charges of refusing to perform a public duty and reckless endangerment related to the death of 25-year-old Dustin Irwin.
