Hanson makes campaign stop

News

A Fargo man who served two terms in the state legislature is running for Congress.

Ben Hanson is a commercial broker who recently visited western North Dakota as he kicked off his campaign.

Hanson is hoping to win his party’s endorsement for the seat held by Republican Kevin Cramer.

Hanson says he got into the race because he believes Cramer is not representing the true interests of North Dakotans.

The Democrat points to CHIP as an example.

That’s the Children’s Health Insurance Program that provides coverage to low and middle income kids who don’t qualify for Medicaid.

Hanson says the program runs out of funds in one week and the House has yet to say if it will be voting to re-authorize it.

“What’s important about that for North Dakotans is that there are five thousand children who receive their health insurance through the CHIP program. Congressman Cramer has not said, even mentioned one way or another if he’s going to be voting for the re-authorization, despite the fact that the CHIP renewal is going to come directly to the only committee that he serves on,” Hanson said.

Hanson is the only announced candidate for the US House seat from North Dakota.

Kevin Cramer has yet to say if he will run for re-election, or perhaps seek the US Senate seat now held by Democrat Heidi Heitkamp.

Heitkamp has announced she is seeking re-election.
