A man and woman accused of child neglect and trafficking in meth made their initial court appearance in Wells County today.
Stephen Kelly and Mallory Schaeffer are facing several felony charges in a case that investigators say is tied in to the drug ring operated by Alexander Lail.
Lail is awaiting sentencing on nearly a dozen felony convictions related to the sale of drugs and associated assaults and other crimes.
Kelly and Schaeffer were without attorneys for today’s court appearance since lawyers were assigned to their cases just yesterday.
The pair heard the charges against them – eight felonies against Kelly and seven against Schaeffer.
Just before the hearing ended, Schaeffer asked for a reduction in her $50,000 bond,
(Jim Hovey, SE District Judge) “Based on the seriousness of the offenses, I am going to deny the request Ms. Schaeffer. But speak with your attorney about it and they can bring it back and request a reduction at a later date.”
Schaeffer and Kelly were allegedly were caring for four children in this home in Harvey, which investigators described as filthy and health officials deemed to be a dangerous building.
Court documents quote investigators as saying there was food from social services lying around that had not been provided to the children, ages one through six.
And they say the kids were unbathed and their feet were so grimy and dirty it was hard to tell they had feet.
The defendants are being held at the Heart of America Correctional Facility in Rugby, pending their preliminary hearing.
