Hazen child gets hot tub from make a wish foundation

A young boy from Hazen will now have the perfect way to warm up in the North Dakota winter.

November 28, 2017, is the day the Wanzek’s will never forget, that’s when they were faced with the unknown.

“We were in very active treatment for leukemia. So, we were at the doctor for two weeks, and eleven days. There were months we would have to be in the hospital for three days,” said Angela Wanzek, Charlie’s Mother.

Their son Charlie Wanzek, just seven years old, was diagnosed with a type of blood and bone cancer.

Two years later, after being recommended by his doctor, his wish was granted by Make A Wish Foundation of North Dakota.

Charlie wished for a hot tub and not only will he enjoy it with his friends and family, but it will help his condition.

“One of the side effects of some of his meds is that he has body aches and joint pain. That is a common side effect from his condition. So, the hot tub will really help ease that discomfort he has,” said Angela Wanzek.

The building of the hot tub was a collaborative effort from several organizations throughout North Dakota.

Although his condition is treatable, Charlie lives each day like it is his last.

“I am very, very thankful. I mean who doesn’t want a hot tub and who doesn’t like hot tubs,” said Charlie Wanzek.

A child must have a qualifying medical condition to get a wish granted and be referred by either a family member, doctor, or social worker.
