We brought you a story earlier this year about a Dickinson girl who won the state hoopshoot competition.
If you remember, Heart River third grader Mickellyn Walker beat our Ray Strickland in a free throw shooting contest
And now she will be headed to Chicago to compete in Nationals this weekend.
Her school held a surprise pep rally on Tuesday to wish her good luck in her competition.
Mickellyn even showed her skills to the whole school.
She beat one of the teachers in a game of one on one.
Mickellyn’s classmates bum rushed her with hugs just to let her know the school is rooting for her to go all the way.
“I’m just very happy that they did it for me and I really like the support,” she said.
Mickellyn’s mom Nicole Walker says she told her to just have fun and to not put to much pressure on herself..
“This was her goal to make it to Chicago,” she said. “We just keep telling her to enjoy it and whatever happens happens, but you made your goal and now it’s just enjoy it.”
Mickellyn says it was overwhelming to see the amount of support the school gave her.
“I just was super excited and I just didn’t know what to do. I was just so happy.”
Mrs.Walker added: “Everyone has gone above and beyond,” she said. “We are new to Dickinson [and] just to welcome us into their school and now to have this extreme support…everyone is just amazing here. I can’t even speak enough to what everyone has done for it’s just been so so nice.”
Mickellyn says she hopes to make 20 out of 25 free throws.
Let’s hope that’s enough, so Mickellyn can bring the national championship trophy home to North Dakota.
Mickellyn will be competing in Nationals on Saturday. She will be one of 12 kids participating.
